Tax and TEFLers
Some schools still pay some employees their hourly rate times number of hours worked with no tax withheld. Who is responsible for paying tax in those circumstances?
If a tefler has their own work permit that states they are self employed, and they are paid hourly by a school....it would be the responsibility of that tefler to pay tax. (Correct?).
There is a threshold under which no tax needs to be paid (i believe). If the school is not providing a copy of a wage slip, how would the individual, who is not providing an invoice ...only a timesheet, prove what they had or had not earned?
How does an individual ensure their tax situation is ok without having to pay an accountant?
Finally, any rumours regarding foreigners here, regardless of visa and work permit status, having to have a certain amount in a bank account or evidence of x amount of money (esp. if not retired?)

Are you going for a how-many-threads-can-I-start-before-I-sleep record?

Not sure why that would be an issue. Let us just let the forum die, shall we?LexusSchmexus wrote:She's been on a roll ever since she landed.

Tax free threshold for residents is 1m riel per month; no tax free threshold for non tax residents.violet wrote:Some schools still pay some employees their hourly rate times number of hours worked with no tax withheld. Who is responsible for paying tax in those circumstances?

If your gross monthly salary is above 1m riel, your employer is obliged to withhold and pay the tax.
Are there any foreign teachers that don't earn more than $250 a month?

P.U.C. used to (dunno about now) a cuties bait-and-switch trick -- telling mugs
the rate-per-hour before tax was with-held - from $11 to $9-something

Is that the case even for those not on a contract and who have a work permit that states they are self employed?epidemiks wrote:Tax free threshold for residents is 1m riel per month; no tax free threshold for non tax residents.violet wrote:Some schools still pay some employees their hourly rate times number of hours worked with no tax withheld. Replied to a few of your posts, like this one. Washed my Moto. Went for a run. Ate breakfast. Went for a cruise on Moto. Read a book. Went for coffee. Cleaned the toilet.violet wrote:What have you done lately?YaTingPom wrote:Are you going for a how-many-threads-can-I-start-before-I-sleep record?

If self employed, selling their services by the hour to the school, then the school has no obligation to deal with any taxes.

that's the problem... it's a grey area that could be manipulated to go against the person. 'Selling their services to the school by the hour' could be claimed even thought it is a case of just not being on a contract yet. This is the case for a few employees of schools, although I am unaware how many might have a work permit that says self employed... not many, I suppose.
So, how does an individual ensure their tax situation is ok? just have enough aside for when the shit hits the fan?

Simple. Don't work for schools that won't provide employment contracts.violet wrote:that's the problem... it's a grey area that could be manipulated to go against the person. that doesn't fix the historical 'not paid tax' situation, though I am sure your simple advice for going forward will be welcomed by others.
