I don't believe the story and I'm quite baffled that so many seem to be willing to accept it at face value. Bollocks! Coughing to make fairly complex demands? Really?
That said, the part about checking the bank account balance having the card number and the PIN code doesn't sound that outrageous to me. My experience with Cambodian banks is limited to only one bank and I've never used their phone banking, but in Thailand you could definitely do that. So unless someone can confirm that the bank in question doesn't have such a phone banking facility that allows you to check your balance, I wouldn't dismiss that part.
Testing to make a purchase, on the other hand, either wouldn't require the PIN code or would require the physical card (which was still in the car) as well. For any kind of "card not present" transaction, the PIN code isn't needed. Quite a bad way to check the balance, in any case.

Nice of them to do that,.giving money back. the world needs more of these kind of criminals.violet wrote:I'm not sure because it is five months ago now and it is not the type of detail I remember. My Three Mothers Tell Me I'm An Attention Whore.. I Love My Mums
Yeah, looks more like a soap, with each episode, a huge amount of items, real people seldom or never come across. Add a cliffhanger, and you can expect the audience to follow the attention.Alex wrote:I don't believe the story and I'm quite baffled that so many seem to be willing to accept it at face value. Many years ago, I was walking back to my hotel in Clearwater Florida, it may have been another town but was definitely Florida, a little worse for wear. Why I was on my own I cannot remember, perhaps I had had an arguement with my mates, there were about ten of us 21 years old and causing mayhem throughout the southern states. Anyway, drunk and swaying from side to side a mini van pulls up with two blokes in it and they offer to give me a lift back to my hotel which was perhaps a couple of miles awaysaying something along the lines that a young tourist shouldn't be walking that area late at night. They offered me a puff which I declined , I had had enough booze and puff already. They were quite insistent that I have a puff which I remember ade me feel nervous, both men were in their forties perhaps a touch younger. When they went past my turn off I freaked out and slid open the side door and rolled out like a commando. How the fuck I didn't break a bone I don't know.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

II can’t be bothered responding in depth to comments and questions right now. I didn’t lie but quite agree that my brain may have filled things in as best it could to make sense of the weirdness. For all I know they were going to give me a hair colour from the back seat. Perhaps more plausible than spraying acid. I have gone through all the doubts everyone else has and failed to understand parts of it.
It is what it is. Believe it or not.
The comments about the card and knowing no money available ....yeah, I wondered how they could know too. That is actually a part of the story I have few doubts about. The card was an ANZ Royal card if I recall correctly. The ‘acid’ was probably me just trying to understand what was going on. I felt unsafe. As for stopping. They stopped for the driver to piss on the side of the road and later stopped for fuel. Why didn’t I run, or walk away for that matter? Because I felt more vulnerable doing that than staying.
I commented about machetes and rape....those fears were not about the people in the car, they were concerns about putting myself in an even more vulnerable situation than getting in a car with three strangers, which, by the way was less risky, i thought, than getting in a car with just a driver.
I had no details to give about the vehicle or the people. I am unable to describe them or the car now and wouldn’t even have been able to back then. What I did recall today is I was in a different vehicle from where we stopped on outskirts of PP to my neighbourhood than we had been coming from Poipet to SR.
Yes, I likely should have behaved differently in many ways but that is hindsight. I behaved as I thought best given ALL the information available to me and given various scenarios at play on my head.
As a kid I always wanted to run away from home but never did because I thought through to the next step.... I run away and then what? Where do I go? What do i do for food? So to me it was more logical to put up with what was causing me to want to run away than to go down that path. Perhaps it is just the way I am when faced with such dilemmas....stay with what I know rather than walk blindly into the unknown.
I myself was concerned I had been drugged. I now put my accelerated heart rate and excessive sweating down to stress and anxiety. Drug tests came back clean. As for my mind...I am confident I have all my faculties, despite an active imagination.
Anyway, thanks gavinmac for sharing the story of the American you met who had had things taken and her passport thrown out to her.
Over to the rest of you to share your weird taxi ride stories.

Total fantasy. If Khmers want to rob you they rob you. They won't take you on a free mystery tour of the country before dropping you off and giving you money.

Not total fantasy. Thanks for your vote of confidence, slavedog. Remind me not to be too friendly next time we cross paths. To say it is all complete fantasy is an insult. I will take it from people I have never met but not from those I have drunk with. No loss to you, I’m sure. Just be sure not to drunkingly hang off me next time we are in the same bar and you are rat faced.slavedog wrote:Total fantasy. If Khmers want to rob you they rob you. I'd have to agree with that. No two ways about it, it is a questionable depiction of actual events. The whole coughing communication thing, which she apparently was easily able to decipher, is just bizarre.slavedog wrote:Total fantasy. If Khmers want to rob you they rob you. Why would the give a damn about her occupation?

Why would the give a damn about her occupation? They are criminals with scruples, only robbing from people of more means?
You lot think i am mad anyway so you may as well have wood for the fire. Introduce yourself and i will be sure to turn the crazy on for your amusement...and mine

Pretty easy. You were travelling alone from Poipet in a shared taxi with no phone. It was obvious that you're not a tourist, so what are you? Most white skins stuck out there teach. Even bushman Poipet thieves know that.violet wrote:I already said everything changed when they realised i was a teacher. How the fuck they found that out, I don’t know.
