Who might be first to go? Methheads and aged expats, TEFLers, NGOers?

How much longer will the white face be welcome here? Cambodia and China's relationship is strengthening each day. Chinese presence here is increasing and, of course, welcomed. Why would Cambodia need the do-gooding whitey to remain present as though Cambodia is still a sick water buffalo needing some assistance from the wealthy and wise American/Australian/French etc?

We talk about the drunken aged expats and methheads being the scourge of Cambodia, but is it the river of people (or so it seems from the daily posts on Facebook pages) wanting to enter Cambodia to teach English language that will be the first victims, followed by those already here?

With the changes occurring in Cambodia, could we expect to have Cambodia tell English language TEFLers/TESL/TESOLers etc. to leave as local teachers are fit for purpose - perhaps retaining a token 2 western teachers in larger language schools such as ACE?
Just a few blocks from the Royal Palace, in the traditional heart of downtown Phnom Penh, sits one of Cambodia's most renowned Chinese schools. Over the past century, the Tuan Hoa School has witnessed the many ups and downs of the capital. Today, it has front-row seats to an unprecedented boom.

Run by a local ethnic Chinese organization, the school is one of the largest Mandarin-speaking elementary and junior high schools outside China and Taiwan. It currently has more than 11,000 students, including those at its branch campus. For Loeung Sokmenh, headmaster of the main campus, things have improved to an astonishing degree. She has been a faculty member there since the school reopened in 1992 after being forced to close in 1970.

Or will it be the NGOs first? The largest number of NGOs per capita of any country in the world. With ever strengthening ties with China, could NGOs expect to finally be pushed out in force?
In October 2016, President Xi made an official visit and left behind $237 million in new aid. Some political analysts said the increasing aid from China reflected a shift in Cambodia’s international politics toward an Asian neighbor that had no qualms about human rights abuses. Human Rights Watch reported that during 2016, Hun Sen and the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) “significantly escalated persecution on political grounds."

I saw some FB photos yesterday of a white guy on TK avenue eating from trash bins. He might be the first to go.

First they came for the sexpats and I did not speak up because I was not a sexpat

Then they came for the methpats and I did not speak up because I was not a methpat

Then they came for the old guys drinking cheap Vietnamese beer outside 7/11 supermarkets in S'ville and I did not ...

That was actually funny.

As for the actual question, I hope the NGOs are forced to leave first because as a group, they do very little good imo. However, they've been such a useful crutch for the government (freebies, aid $ etc) that I doubt they'll be gone for decades to come. They've permeated the Cambodian societal fabric to the point that it's normal for a relatively high percentage of teens or adults to say they want to work for an NGO. Only the overtly political ones will be forced to leave, if any.

The serious answer is that no one will be forced to leave. It'll just force employers and employees to actually get legal. At the end of the day, I do think it'll bring in more qualified people and fewer long-term mongers. I do think that the Teflers, of whose group I assume you're part of, will be weirdly resilient. There's a need, or rather, a demand for them. They'll just eventually flush out the ones that don't have a basic university degree. I've met some who don't even have that, speak like they're in a pub in Manchester and are teaching kids English... The only glitch is the 10-1 Khmer to foreigner ratio that's needed on paper, which makes it difficult for smaller businesses to hire expats. That'll be the clincher and something worth paying attention to in the coming years.

The only issue is people who live here but don't work. I do hope there will be an easy solution for them, as I've got many friends young and old who are in that boat. They either work abroad half the year, or are retired etc. They're top blokes (my friends, so obviously they are), many have families here and so on. I work and employer provides WP, pays for visas and so on, so I couldn't care less about all the current fuss and don't follow it, but I've always said that the kind of shit shows we see around GSM and the likes would eventually cause a clampdown of sorts, and more importantly, make the locals dislike us a lot more. The honeymoon phase is long gone in PP, but there's no need to make them hate us as much as the Thais hate foreigners. Mass tourism always brings a dark side.

Oh, and the locals will get tired of the Chinese as well, no manger how much cash they have. I've heard that a lot of Cambodians are already tired of the Chinese down on the beach, where their presence is more obvious. Fights, drunk drivers etc. Once the housing bubble comes they'll realize Chinese money wasn't all ot was cracked up to be.

good replies, LexusShmeck.

yes, those not working or who pick up a job here and a job there every now and then will be affected. Many of whom have families.
I am in the education field and hope to do other things as well at some point. I had a couple of proposal writing jobs from a contact overseas when I first returned to Cambodia, but I haven't put myself out there to compete with others either online or here in Cambodia ... yet.

Hear and hear, but do not understand; see and see, but do not perceive.
For they do not know what they hear, see, say, or do, and yet they do not concede that they are blind and deaf.

I know plenty of people working in language schools in Vietnam without a degree.

Parents want white face teachers, school owners want profits. I can't see much changing, maybe on paper, but in reality....

Has anyone actually ever been asked to show degree/tefl/celta certs?

The boys on kho San road will be getting some more business, that's all.

At what point do they come from creepy old teachers from Cumbria with a penchant for child rape fiction, Bill?
