the bars are places of solicitation not prostitution,This Charming Man wrote:There's a lot of bollocks being talked about on here. Let's cut to the chase. In everyone of these bars it is possible to barfine a girl and take her back to your room to fuck her for money. Let's not dress it up - that's the reality. The girls know it. The customers know it. And the bar owners both know it and trade on it.
They are places of prostitution. Nothing wrong with that, but the cringing hand-wringing self-justification is tortuous to watch.
Call it as it is. You'll feel better for it.

Many (most? All?) western guys who marry a bar girl/ex bar girl wouldn’t want her to continue to work in a bar once married, or return to work in one. What about cashiers at girly bars? How would you feel about your wife continuing as a cashier there or returning to work as a cashier there? Yay or nay?

Nay. Because everyone knows the "cashier" is fucking everybody and the only people who don't know that are the ones dumb enough to marry the cashier because they were "only the cashier".violet wrote: How would you feel about your wife continuing as a cashier there or returning to work as a cashier there? To me a hostess bar is a bar where customers come to drink and cuddle with young female staff. This may not appeal to some guys but it does have an attraction for many men. Hence the current 121 hostess bars in Phnom Penh. About 15% of customers interestingly come to drink alone or with friends, and ignore the girls completely.Alexandra wrote:Will, you write about the nature of hostess bars. What exactly is it? Because when I call it prostitution some disagree. Please tell us exactly why bargirls are ashamed to tell their families what they do, and what do they do? "Fuck my mouth, cum in my ass", is that an accurate description?
One or more of the girls may want to leave the bar in the company of a customer to spend time together. What they do while they are outside the bar is up to them.
90% of customers leave alone, without taking any girls with them.
The girls are ashamed to be seen taking care of customers and yes many are inwardly ashamed of what they do. Cambodia is still fairly conservative regarding female behaviour with males in public, especially if the females are from rural backgrounds, which is the case for the majority of bar girls.
Prostitutes? As a previous poster said, a hostess girl will be extremely angry if you call her a prostitute. They see their primary role as entertaining customers in a bar in return for ladydrinks. They see the street walkers and brothel girls as prostitutes.
Yes a lot of them are willing to go out of the bar with a customer and have sex.
I would describe them as bar hostesses who may be willing to perform acts of prostitution. But I don't see them as primarily prostitutes.
Many riverside waitresses also are willing to occasionally have sex with customers for money. Would you describe them as prostitutes or waitresses? How about the legitimate massage workers who also sometimes prostitute themselves? Are they prostitutes? How about the professional and locally famous singers at the bigger Khmer barbecue places? For a fairly large sum of money they will go with a guy. Prostitutes?
I don't see it as a black and white issue. There are many shades of grey and hostess bars fall in the middle of this.
Is a hostess bar a brothel? Not to me. Brothels are businesses where sex for money happens on the premises. This is not the case with the vast majority of hostess bars.
Hostess bars (and their owners) are not to everyone's taste. That's understandable. People come from many different backgrounds and cultures and have their own strong views on the hostess bar business. Others have a more relaxed attitude towards them. Both views are valid. But I do think that people should be able to have their own views and beliefs without being constantly denigrated by others who just have different personal views.

I have learned that 'hostess' bars is the pc term for 'girly' bars. Political correctness on k440. Well, i never!

But you do see them as prostitutes if they have sex for money, because that makes them prostitutes. They can get as angry as they want about what they are called, but it doesn't change the definition. If someone gets convicted for a felony, the are a felon. Getting angry at being called a felon doesn't change that fact.youngwill100 wrote:Prostitutes? As a previous poster said, a hostess girl will be extremely angry if you call her a prostitute. From another thread a while back. http://www.khmer440.com/chat_forum/view ... 1&start=15youngwill100 wrote:I don't recall saying that. If I did it's not correct. I kinda laughed at that and would tend to believe your numbers over his.
I think about 60% of the girls have told their family that they work in a hostess bar. But their families may be unaware of the nature of the work at the bar. The rest of the girls tell their parents that they work as a waitress or in a hotel or similar. Or they just tell them about their day job as Meo Den says.
His post above is very accurate about the general situation.

Of this 95% though, very few have families that realise fully what being a hostess involves.
The remaining 5% of girls tell their families that they are working in a restaurant.
