Compared to any western power, sure, but if it came down to who Cambodia would support in any UN or ASEAN dispute between China and Japan, say in the South China Sea conflicts, HE would surely vote in favor of China over Japan or the US, thus making any perceived goodwill gained by the Japanese aid over the past 20+ years pretty much null and void just like the American or EU efforts to gain influence.Lucky Lucan wrote:They have a lot more swing here than any western power.

I wonder if this scenario is being repeated in Myanmar. The Japanese give lots of no-strings-attache aid, but China is Myanmar's long-term buddy...In giving such no-strings-attached aid to Cambodia for high-profile infrastructure projects under HE's tenure, the Japanese have actually helped ensconce the current regime in power through the difficult times.

Infrastructure such as bridges, flood control, and irrigation systems tend to make a difference, and a bit of de-mining goes a long way. I'm not sure what your real question is, are you asking why foreign nations such as Japan aren't holding the kingdom to ransom? That's not the way they roll.0zirC wrote:What single bit of difference have the made? What impact and influence have they had? Towards the country's political situation?
