Arsenic in rice
I never knew this, but apparently rice contains 10-20 times more inorganic arsenic than other cereal crops because it is grown in water. If it is cooked in the traditional way i.e. a rice cooker, the arsenic is reabsorbed into the rice, making it potentially harmful, especially to young children. On the other hand, if it is soaked overnight and then cooked in water, the toxicity is greatly reduced.
Now...How do you convince a Cambodian woman to reevaluate the way they've been cooking rice for generations..? Because when you soak it overnight..."ot tgnang'' (or however you spell that damn word!)...Arsenic inhibits brain development...

May have missed it, but didn't see any actual amount/ level of arsenic in that article. Obviously the amounts are tiny, though the cumulative effect may impact on certain consumers.
On a side note, arsenic is/was commonly used in the making of white bread to lengthen shelf life.

I thought it was Angkor with the arsenic problem, which is what led to the massive hangovers, but that Carlsberg fixed that?spitthedog wrote:Also, what level of toxins are we talking about per day with rice compared to say....4 cans of Anchor?
get real:
UK sandwich eating produces same CO2 as 'millions of cars'
London – Britain's annual sandwich consumption produces the same amount of carbon dioxide as more than eight million cars, according to a study published on Thursday.
Around 11.5 billion sandwiches are consumed each year in Britain, half of which are homemade and half bought, according to the British Sandwich Association (BSA).
This annual consumption "generates, on average, 9.5 million tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the annual use of 8.6 million cars," said Adisa Azapagic, professor at Manchester University, which produced the study.

A dozen camels disqualified for botox in ‘camel beauty contest’
Twelve camels have been disqualified from Saudi Arabia’s annual King Abdulaziz Camel Festival for using botox to enhance their features.
These camels have hit a hump in the road as judges rate thousands of camels based on their physical appearances. The camel is considered national animal of Saudi Arabia.
In a bid to make the camels appear more attractive, botox was used for their lower lip, upper lip, nose and jaw, reported The Guardian. These features appeared more plump than on the camels who did not have botox done.
According to an article published on Newsweek, the prize money stood at a total of $57m with over 30 000 entries.
The camel festival commenced at the beginning on this month and included events such as camel racing and auctioning.
According to Newsweek, one of the issues raised at the festival is that if a camel who has been injected with botox is sold to a buyer at a high price and the effect wears off after a few months has been compared to athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs.
According to the contest rules and regulations, the violators perpetrators have been banned from this year’s festival as well as the next five sessions of the festival. There is also a possibility of legal penalties pertaining to the animal welfare laws in the kingdom.
