The old owner Carla, sold showbox to the new owner Richard, without giving a heads up to any of her staff, who had loyally been working for her for over five years. On the very night she was leaving, she emptied all the tills and left a series of debts with beer companies. Upon finding this out, a couple of days later, the new owner was livid, and shouted at all the betrayed staff, calling them among other things a "thieving bunch of cunts". The staff, who were already down in the dumps because the person that they had trusted for a long time had just buggered off without any warning, decided they had had enough and quit, forsaking any final salaries. The new owner then took to the Show Box facebook page where he accused them of stealing all the money from the till and leaving him in debt with the beer company. About 5 hours later, he decided to take down the post, realising no doubt that he could actually be taken to court over a false allegation like that.
So it is clear that all this has arisen from a dispute between the old owner and the new, but as always, the main victims are the Khmer staff. The old owner, Carla, still owns a % of Show Box, which is why she has been letting out her inner pikey at the bad reviews on Facebook. I was one of the people who wrote a bad review, and she sent me a message saying that Richard, the new owner, is also accusing her of theft (not publicly though), and that her and her old staff are all on the same boat, which they are obviously not on though, as she was the one who actually took the money and left the debt, and she is laughing all the way to the bank.
From personal experience, she was an awful employer who exploited and did not appreciate her staff, who never paid sick leave, seldom allowed them to go on holiday, and had a lot of them working 13 hour days, 6 day weeks, for which she paid 200 usd a month.
The sad thing is that my description is probably not raising many eyebrows, as western bar owners who run their establishments like a farm is tragic but standard. We, as potential clientele though, do have the power to attempt to set a standard. To try to move away from this colonialist attitude that it is acceptable to treat Khmers a way that no white person would expect to be treated, just because Khmers could have it way, way worse. I call for a boycott of businesses that are known to not afford their staff some basic human decency, until they publicly acknowledge their actions and apologise for them, correcting their ways.
She didn't own showbox five years ago.
$200 per month is a generous bar salary. In fact, across many trades in Cambodia, it would be a decent wage.
Cambodian staff are not the kind who "loyally give five years service" if being malteated.
The stupidity of these comments is astounding...
- Selling or buying a business is a discreet process, the staff should never be privy. If staff know you are selling they may jump ship and jepordise the negotiations/sale.... You may not like it, but its business.
- The owner takes all the profits and float... the dont leave their profits for the new owner WTF???
- If there are any outstanding debts and liabilities the incoming owner should have done their due diligence and completed a proper audit and inspection which is signed off on the contract of sale.
- As far as Im aware the old owner has sold off all shares to an existing shareholder who now owns the business out right.
Obviously the new owner is naive in buying and running a business

The main point that I am trying to make is that due to a dispute between the new idiot and the old cow, the former has posted a comment accusing the Khmer staff of theft very publicly, and this seems to be so acceptable that what people are focusing on is how 200 usd a month for 13 hours a day and 4 days off a month is not as bad as the Khmer Rouge.
Harry Ketley it appears as though you've got a personal vendetta going on here.
How about you stop spreading rumours, telling lies and abusing people then maybe you would'nt look like such a bitter fool.
You've publicly embarrassed yourself..... have a nice day!

I worked with Carla for over a year. She seemed like good people. Nothing shady about her.
Anyone who doesn't like Capitalism is a pathetic loser. God bless the USA and no place else.
Why would anyone call an establishment Showbox? I liked Lucan's description of the place, my sister lived in a squat in London in the seventies. God it was awful. But she did meet her millionaire hippy future husband there.

Im with 526403 and Carla..... Why would you, as a westerner, come to a place like cambodia where the labour is cheap, then pay them fair money?? Doesnt make business sense. Who cares if they were loyal and hardworking!? Money is the priority
No need for the passive aggressive BS
Wages are relative to the business and economy. If the staff were so poorly treated then were they happy to stay for many years? why have they made public facebook posts and comments stating their love for the business and disappointment at the current situation.
You make it sound like people are rolling in money at the expense of a local khmer family.
Youre only trolling
