Jewelry Stalls, Central Market, Trustworthy?
At one stall I was shown a ruby "from Cambodia." First time I heard Cambo had them.
I was also show a flat stone, the lady called a garnet ruby. I know garnet and I know ruby, but I had never heard the terms together.
The "silver" of the rings looked a little too white and bright.
I have my doubts.
My instinct is that the shops across the street from Psar Thmei to the north are honest. There are also shops inside Sorya that seem honest but somewhat awkward to deal with.

business ethics is a foreign concept. You have to be able to tell for yourself if it is real or not...they would sell you a yellow crayon as gold if you would buy it.
i recall talking to a man who displayed real knowledge of gems, am fairly certain ruby from cambodia did get a mention. was long ago.
if i had a purpose to buy gems, chantaburi in Thailand would be where i would head, dont know comparative prices with cambodia

D Hindley behind the palace sells local gems and I'd trust him over any of the sellers at Central.

A shoppers guide to beating the gem cheats (from PPP about 20 years ago)
THERE are many locally mined gemstones in Cambodia. The most precious is the ruby followed by sapphires colored from blue through green to yellow. A so-called "cornflower" blue sapphire of good cut and color is an exceptionally beautiful local gem. Some of the other semi-precious stones from Cambodia include Blue Zircon (in its natural state, brown), Peridot, Amethyst, Spinel and there are literally buckets of Garnets (mainly browns and reds). The quality of cutting gemstones in Phnom Penh is generally up to international standard.
If a stone is cheap and flawless it is likely to be synthetic. Almost all natural gemstones will have some minor flaws e.g. a small speck of iron or a wispy feather looking inclusion.
The town is full of synthetic stones and there are many less than honest jewelers about. Synthetics are stones produced in a laboratory and have the same chemical composition as the natural gem. If a stone is cheap and flawless it is likely to be synthetic. Almost all natural gemstones will have some minor flaws e.g. a small speck of iron or a wispy feather looking inclusion.
In summary, remember rule one: if you cant get a "money-back" guarantee, don't buy!

Lying is almost the norm in the gemstone and jewelry business unless you build up relationships i reckon. Full of scoundrels i guess.
I know years ago most sapphires were heat treated with Beryllium to improve the colour (and the heat treatment in an oven makes them less cloudy/melts the normal imperfections). Not many pure natural sapphires around.

Easy to get gold tested with the acid test though.
Maybe better buying gems online? If i remember rightly this website had a very good reputation. Based in Bangkok, with also a shop there. Dunno now though.

I’d be more inclined to buy magic beans in central market rather than precious stones.

Pailin was famous for rubies for a long time. The KR allowed the place to be pretty much mined out in the 90s though. Most gemstones come from Rattanakiri now.Timeslot Enigmatic wrote:At one stall I was shown a ruby "from Cambodia." First time I heard Cambo had them.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I just bought a green amethyst from a jeweler I trust acoss the street from Psar Thmei. Name of the shop, RP Gemstones.
There are many green amethysts in PP, while in other cities almost unheard of or they show you a different much less beautiful stone.
Everyone agrees they are from Brazil and start purple but are treated to get a light green-blue.
