I never understood why someone would attempt to skim from atm's in developing countries. The risk of having $1000 worth of equipment discovered and confiscated hardly seems worth the pay day.

Because the law enforcement officers in developing countries are lax, unsophisticated, and corrupt such that your chances of being arrested and prosecuted are quite low?tuk-tukfish wrote:I never understood why someone would attempt to skim from atm's in developing countries.

This, also there is lots of expats here and other places online who like to brag about how much money they transfer to and from their home countries. One good account of someone who doesn't monitor their accounts would well be worth it, now multiply that by dozens or even hundreds.gavinmac wrote:Because the law enforcement officers in developing countries are lax, unsophisticated, and corrupt such that your chances of being arrested and prosecuted are quite low?tuk-tukfish wrote:I never understood why someone would attempt to skim from atm's in developing countries.

Sure, because there aren't any rich people here.tuk-tukfish wrote:I never understood why someone would attempt to skim from atm's in developing countries.

Most ATMs require you remove hats/sunglasses before entering.
Skimming ATMs here is way less hazardous than doing it in any developed country.
For one, most security guards here are asleep/ wary of demanding foreigners remove hats/sunglasses, as you can see.

ירי ילדים והפצצת אזרחים דורש אומץ, כמו גם הטרדה מינית של עובדי ההוראה.
I’ve never seen or heard of anyone being asked to remove their hat/sunglasses/fake nose whilst using an ATM in any country.
I was asked to remove my prescription sunglasses in Canadia but every time I tried to read the thing she was showing me by putting them back on she told me off!

‘Please press 1 if you are wearing sunglasses’
‘You pressed 1’

They have signs on every ATM in the capital and the guard will often ask you to remove your hat/ sunglasses if you haven't already.YaTingPom wrote:I’ve never seen or heard of anyone being asked to remove their hat/sunglasses/fake nose whilst using an ATM in any country.

surprisingly, i was asked by a security guard at AMK in Sihanoukville, it was all very civil and just an oversight on my behalf. But, strangely he was sacked not long after that!YaTingPom wrote:I’ve never seen or heard of anyone being asked to remove their hat/sunglasses/fake nose whilst using an ATM in any country.

The ATM in question is next to one of the houses owned by the late deputy PM (R.I.P.), maybe the bank thought paying for security would be redundant in the neighbourhood.

Yep. I sometimes find it funny walking into a bank displaying a picture sign inside or at the entrance saying no bomb/grenades and guns are allowed. Like durrrrrrrrrrr!Lucky Lucan wrote:They have signs on every ATM in the capital and the guard will often ask you to remove your hat/ sunglasses if you haven't already.YaTingPom wrote:I’ve never seen or heard of anyone being asked to remove their hat/sunglasses/fake nose whilst using an ATM in any country.

Far, far fewer fewer rich people here than the countries these criminals usually target.Lucky Lucan wrote:Sure, because there aren't any rich people here.tuk-tukfish wrote:I never understood why someone would attempt to skim from atm's in developing countries.
True, but how many of those people come along in the 3-4 (max) hours that the secreted camera's battery last for? Unless the perps goal is to secure free groceries they're going to need the pin also. Pin pad overlays that record the numbers punched in do exist but they cost an arm and a leg and stick out like dogs balls.Gardiguy wrote:One good account of someone who doesn't monitor their accounts would well be worth it, now multiply that by dozens or even hundreds.

No denying that.
A bloke I used to know did a bit of "research" into this topic a few years back. Amazing at how easy and legal some of this kit is to obtain.
