Australian and Khmer Soldiers Blown up in Kampong Speu
I've been up there many times. Throwing hand grenades is a popular thing, if I were to speculate, it would be that a grenade had a dodgy pin, or was thrown without correct procedure, then, for some reason matey picks it up to check.
The general in charge of the range sent a message to everyone who works there to delete any videos or photos taken or shared regarding the incident. Bad for business....

This confirms my suspicion...
http://amp.kentucky.com/news/nation-wor ... 60069.htmlMinistry spokesman General Chhum Socheat said Friday that the Australians went to the military base after being invited by Cambodian soldiers who were their friends. He said the mine exploded after one of the Australians "played with it."
"We did not invite them to train our soldiers but they just visited their friends. But once they saw the mine, they picked it up and played with it before it exploded," he said.

Jeezus. I would not touch a live round never mind an UXO!
RIP to all.
I heard the guy who set up the firing range in Ream has sold it. Partly because it’s hard to control shit loads of excitable tourists especially when they’ve had a few!

So Liam Cochran, the SEA correspondent for abc who wrote the article above is saying ita possible the deaths occurred at one of the pay to play shooting ranges, not an RCAF base.
The "pay-to-play" shooting range was on armed forces land, as most of them are. The 2 Australians were paying customers. I thought we had already established this.
The PPP jumped the gun by calling the 2 Aussies "Australian Army technical de-mining experts", but have now edited their article.

My first thoughts on reading this and the location was the newly advertised "shooting range" in Kampong Speu. I'm guessing that nobody picked up a "UXO", it's more likely some ancient grenade/ RPG that malfunctioned and exploded and they are trying to cover it up. I'm also guessing that "shooting ranges" for tourists in Cambodia will soon be a thing of the past.PSD_Kiwi wrote:The "pay-to-play" shooting range was on armed forces land, as most of them are. Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Ah, I only skimmed the thread, didn't realise that had been raised.PSD_Kiwi wrote:The "pay-to-play" shooting range was on armed forces land, as most of them are. The 2 Australians were paying customers. I thought we had already established this.

The aussie pulled the pin and refused to let go. The khmer guy tried to wrestle it off him couldn't in time and was killed by a shrapnel wound to the neck. There was panic, as this is not strictly permitted, with the tour guide getting in his car and getting as far away as possible, as fast as possible. Shit, wtf can we say?*

The PPP only followed what they and other news sources had been given I think what that tweet says is probably true as in a cover up now the truth is out and Pedros has suggested a scenario that fits with the injuries instead of "stood on a mine"...epidemiks wrote:Ah, I only skimmed the thread, didn't realise that had been raised.PSD_Kiwi wrote:The "pay-to-play" shooting range was on armed forces land, as most of them are. interesting point LL the place of the incident is "approximately 1/2 way between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville" which coincidentally is Pedros' brother in laws "place to shoot and blow stuff up, all under the expert instruction of RCAF officers" funnily enough that part of the post doesn't exist so it looks like chicken started the thread. luckily google still has the main text. Now I have no axe to grind with Pedros and it's probably a smart move to wax something you were promoting that ended up with the death of two people and multiple injured.Lucky Lucan wrote:My first thoughts on reading this and the location was the newly advertised "shooting range" in Kampong Speu. But i'm interested Migs how can others get such privileges? to delete their posts,as Pedros is a contributor not a mod he surely couldn't do it himself? is it through simple requests? backhanders?

These types, if true, reminded me of the expats I met in Korea how they planned to travel to Cambodia for vacation blowing a cow with a bazooka for 50 bucks a pop, shooting up goats with an AK47 for 20 bucks, and bang the APSARA dancers like ones on the ancient stone carvings.
