A little update. According to the Cambodia’s business registration website, Malaysian businessman Sivakumar Ganapathy is no longer listed as a director of the @phnompenhpost. His directorship ceased on July 2, exactly 2 months after he purchased the paper. 1/4
Mr Ly Tayseng is listed as the new director. He is also listed as the publisher and CEO on the masthead. Mr Tayseng is a member of a district working group for Hun Sen’s ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). 2/4
For anyone still questioning whether the sale of the Phnom Penh Post was “coerced” by the government or part of a broader plan, this should give a little insight. 3/4A note of caution about this tweet. I thought the link to the CPP working group was confirmed. I’ve since been told it’s not. Apologies for any confusion caused. Nevertheless, Mr Tayseng does have government links, as per his profile: http://www.hbslaw.asia/index.php/people ... ly-taysengThe CPP and government are often interchangeable in #Cambodia, but that doesn’t excuse sloppiness on my part. I’ll update with confirmation if/when I get it. NB: This doesn’t negate the fact that the director/publisher role appears to have been transferred from Siva to Tayseng.
Additionally, although the heat from the initial press frenzy is off, the past two months have seen more resignations from foreign editorial staff and Cambodian reporters. 4/4
