2018 Tourist Numbers (updated monthly)
Seems silly comparing now to pre 2015 but it’s true!
Yes, I know some have been here since blah blah but the scale and speed of change is unprecedented, probably anywhere.
I was in Thailand in the early 90s. So what. Never going back (Koh Samui) because I want to keep those hazy memories.
There’s a new “Pub Street” opening up in SHV, just down from Build Bright University, in O’bie area towards the Don Bosco area. Martini (beach) and Stumble Inn (plaza/pub street) are moving there I believe. Looks like it’ll be ready within a few months.

So the Chinese have basically made Cambodia a vassal state?

i grew up next to a leech infested swamp/lake and had the best times as a kid, building raffs and pontoons, now the whole area is shopping centres and housing development,i agree never go back its too sad sometimes to see the changes.
The great thing about the Tonle Sap lake is nature has made it very difficult to develop, with the constant changing of the water levels, lack of roads, its mainly floating villages and boats only:)

Areas of Paradise sur Mer are having constant power and water cuts at the mo.
Heard that downtown, one side of the street is selling water to the other side!
Will the utility companies be the next to be bought out?

Inside the last week I have had 2 demonstrations of the Chinese change in PP.Baas Babelaas wrote:So the Chinese have basically made Cambodia a vassal state?
1. I stopped in a shop near Ratana plaza which sells cabling. The staff in the shop were Chinese, they couldn’t speak English or Khmer. Clearly they are getting enough business from Chinese speakers to warrant not having someone who speaks Khmer or English.
2. Went to play pool in a new place in TK. All Khmer staff, Chinese music playing, and at the end the receipt was printed in Chinese. Khmer staff weren’t able to explain charges to me as they didn’t understand it either. Vast majority of customers were Khmer - c. 75%....
I found it all a bit discombobulating.
Really interesting stats. Most countries just give the Chinese a street or a block in major towns, which has seemed to work quite well in the past. The Chinese entrepreneurs must be cock-a-hoop with this amount of freedom in a foreign country

Chinese tourists are everywhere, in Europe on my last trip there, hordes appearing from nowhere, and back here, I was caught by a huge swarm at the airport arrival, where they seemed to be processed separately from regular visitors. A family friend of mine here, taught himself Chinese, and is doing real well as a guide, sporting a brand new Camry and all.

Cambodia welcomed more than three million foreign tourists in the first half this year, an increase of 12.7 per cent compared to the same period last year, official data from the Ministry of Tourism said.

And yet some folk on FB say the numbers have dropped by 60% in Thailand and the Chinese are not coming here.

Overall, the numbers have not dropped but obviously the supply of everything is fast outstripping demand.YaTingPom wrote:And yet some folk on FB say the numbers have dropped by 60% in Thailand and the Chinese are not coming here.

Sure takes them a while to release the numbers. Here are the year-to-date numbers through October 2018, followed by just October arrivals. I also included the outbound numbers, to show the increase in Cambodians traveling abroad.
