Just for curiosities sake violet, do you get called 'sister' by either men or women? I know the Khmer girls call each other sister a lot.
Ming ??
Never Ming :P

I get both sister and bong from both males and females. And sometimes madam

Not elder person, but slightly older person.
It goes in this order.

Khmoey (niece or nephew)
P’oun (little brother or sister)
- - - - - - - - - -
Me
- - - - - - - - - -
Bong/Chai (older brother or sister)
Pu/Ming/Ee/Meas (uncle or aunt)
Om (older uncle or aunt)
Ta / Yey (grandpa grandma)

Alternatively, Bong can also be used for people who are younger than you but are in a position of respect.

It largely depends on the subjects age relative to you/your parents.

To me it feels like the word bong (bong srey) is more or less used for people in the same age range as you, more or less, instead of someone slightly older. Except for the bars, where every man is a 'bong'.

I think if they aren’t sure then they will err on the side of respect and call you Bong.

Unless anyone speak fluent Khmer I don't think you should engage in conversation. Call them Champions, the lot of them. they understand that.

Yeah, maybe. But if they want to be really polite they have more options like 'loke', 'hear'... Anyway, I guess the use of Khmer language is less formal than 50 years ago, like most languages.

"Hea" is actually the chinese (teachew) counterpart of "bong", it refers exclusively to a male person.
