With all the guesthouses (and some hotels) I’ve stayed in here, I’ve booked by phone or email, or sometimes just rocked up. Very rarely asked to pay up front. Passport is photocopied. Pay the next morning.

Same. In hotels in nearly every other country they swiped a credit card on check-in. I’ve always paid cash the next day in Cambodia.

But then the question is, have you lost more revenue because guests are offended that you make them pay in advance and it sours the experience, and they don't return or don't recommend the place. Or guests check out when they run out of money instead of staying and then paying more at the end of the week when they have money.

I'm not suggesting that your approach is wrong. It's just that many hotels in Cambodia seem to think it's good business to let people pay later, there must be a reason why they think that's better.

Valid point but then I have always worked on the 4-5 star market where people fully expect to have to guarantee their bookings. Might be different in a soap-dodger hostel.

When i owned a guesthouse over 1o years ago, most guests would settle the account at the end of the stay,BUT they must have at least a passport or credit card details as security.this guy had either, claiming hes stuff was stolen.therefore the risk of non payment becomes unacceptable.
The front line staff should not have to make any decisions on who can be believed and who cant, just follow the company policy, which will or should be well known, writtern up and followed,
