Khmer birthdays, no big deal?
Had a good conversation with some 'sisters' about their birth-dates, both didn't know exactly or really care, they consider new year more important and a day of their age. How common is this thought although changing now to a more western celebration.
Never mind.

I think a lot of Cambodians don't know exactly when their birthday is, nor do they care. My wife has (the same) random date on her birth certificate/id/passport which she thinks is about 5-6 months off the correct date. She doesn't know the birthdays of any of her parents/step-parents/siblings/cousins/friends. They each pick a random day from time to time, call it their birthday and use it as an excuse for a party and to solicit presents from the guests.

As far as I can work out most adults or at least older people here don't celebrate their own birthdays, it's mostly kids parties. I'm not sure what the cut off point is, but like you say dates are not always clear, especially for those who grew up during the wars.

I'd thought I'd read about this somewhere - that traditionally, birthdays aren't a big deal and that most Khmer measure their age by the New Year?

Yes this is what I was told, New Year is the big day for Khmers
The Thai girls pin money gifts all over themselves, never seen this done with a male though. Was told by an ex pat some girls do this more than once a year...low season.

No big deal for adults unless they're skint, in which case they invite 300 people to a birthday party with photographers and catering and make a tidy profit on the envelopes.
My wife considers Khmer new year her real birthday.
