Doesn't Amok have prahoc in it anyway? I've eaten it with families outside of tourist areas but would agree it's usually just for special occasions.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

It’s certainly got some sort of smelly ‘krueng’ in it. Don’t think it is prahoc... but I’m no chef!Lucky Lucan wrote:Doesn't Amok have prahoc in it anyway? I've eaten it with families outside of tourist areas but would agree it's usually just for special occasions.

it usually has some prahoc..the alternatives would be fish sauce/shrimp paste...

Just going to call Pedros out here and say his recollection is wrong. You have seen it on more menus than you think, you just want to remember differently. But I've sat somewhere [in the sticks] with you irl that had it on the menu and I can recall that. Maybe your affliction with Fish Amok has deeper roots. Get a therapist.
Noob.

Some menu opposite the hotel near your farm had it. That's a fairly out of town place. I don't even know why it had english translation. I like reading menus tho so I peruse them hardstyle.
Noob.
Will you ever return Gareth? The farm has changed a lot, I built a western* style house and expanded my menagerie, we got bare coffee houses in the hood and even a couple of semi decent restaurants these days.

Pedro, what language do you talk to your Khmer family daily? I did not read all the responses. Amok is just a marketing thing. Khmer food is all about petal and mortar which turns out to no more than pestle and mortar in term of tradition food for spices and food litterally like how Khmer natives near and far eat daily...tek kreoung and shits. Khmer lost a lot of its history, Thai do better jobs.

Talk to them? Well I talk to the kids in English (although their Khmer is much better), the adults I just grunt and point, if they talk to me, or I want to know who took the frying pan/tools/stove etc out of my house. I built a 2m high perimeter wall, at not an inconsiderable cost, for a reason.
Pestle and mortar to grind things up is very common.

I was taught how to make amok once... and I was surprised at how long of a process it is, which did indeed a lot of mortar and pestle time.pedros wrote:Pestle and mortar to grind things up is very common.the chicken wrote:Pedro, what language do you talk to your Khmer family daily?
