Khmer thoughts on Western drivers
Khmer thoughts on Western drivers
So we know how crazy driving is here, but if you’re a Cambodian and you’ve only ever lived here, do you know that it’s this fucked up?
Thinking about that, what do Cambodians think when they see a barang driving a car? Do they know it’s a bit different from us?
I asked one friend and she said foreigners were crazier drivers than Khmers, going much faster and much more aggressive. That might be true, as we cope with some craziness but overcompensate.
Thoughts?

Foreigners are crazy, cannot do texting and weave through traffic like we can.
We can also fit 6 people on our moto.

Never mind.
Guilty! I drive like an asshole and get in all sorts of exciting adventure because of it. I've been threatened by high ranking police while his wife was cussing me out and flipping me off because I was making a right turn to go to 63 while he was doing a left turn to go to 63 and I didn't stop. I've upset multiple VIPs that have tried to force me to back up and give them way not because they're right but because I'm white and I always refuse, finger pointing and shouting or not. I speed as much as I can and break red lights when I see the police because I like the rush I get when they try to stop me. One time I cut the whole line of cars off at night time going from Sofitel past Aeon towards Naga by switching to the wrong lane. I overtook at least 20 cars before my luck ran out and I had a stare down with an RCAF vehicle who turned right from 294. Luckily the 3rd car behind me let me slide in. I really wish I had it on camera. It's my proudest asshole overtake yet!OffRoader wrote:I asked one friend and she said foreigners were crazier drivers than Khmers, going much faster and much more aggressive. I'm also a nice driver. I stop for more pedestrians than not even if it pisses off the people behind me. I don't honk at scavengers but patiently wait and try not to bother them because I know that they're only trying to make a living. I give way and let people cross even if the light is green for my lane. I pull aside for ambulances and people on bikes in front of me can take their time before I overtake them as safe as possible.

My staff think I drive too fast.
I don’t really understand how they reach this conclusion. They say I drive too fast, but safe.
Maybe it means I don’t do the stupid things on the roads that most Khmer drivers do.

I don't understand people driving cars here, it seems at a standstill many places, as I swoosh by on my tainted Suzuki. I've seen a few reckless white drivers though, and usually give them the space to get on with their important matters.

That’s a fair point if you are only ever in Phnom Penh.newnewnewbie wrote:I don't understand people driving cars here, it seems at a standstill many places, as I swoosh by on my tainted Suzuki. I only drive when travelling outside the city.
It’s motorbike (or PassApp when it’s raining) in PP.

Same for me. I always let the family drive in the city and I drive the highways for longer trips. That way they get to drive in the city like maniacs (but at speeds that will not kill us) and I drive all the dangerous routes which I just don't trust them to do safely.ផោមក្លិនស្អុយ wrote:That’s a fair point if you are only ever in Phnom Penh.newnewnewbie wrote:I don't understand people driving cars here, it seems at a standstill many places, as I swoosh by on my tainted Suzuki. This reads a bit tongue in cheek, but kind of summarizes my driving. I know which red lights I can run and which ones I can't. I certainly drive faster than 97% of cars on the road, but I'm way better than some of the freshies I see on bikes or Bong Thoms in large Lexus's. I had a similar passing the line of cars experience, which I posted about the other day, when a cop took a picture of my license plate. I try not to give a cm, as you can't show weakness on the road. I like the liberty that knowing even if I get busted doing something wrong, there are no "points on the license" or massive fines waiting for you in the mailAlexandra wrote:Guilty! But, I also do my best to not run over children and let them cross in front of me (which can confuse them), and don't blind people at night with my high beams.
Some asshole hit me the other night though, while he was swerving in and out of traffic. He didn't stop, and it took me about 5 minutes to force him over. I really need to download that off the dash cam. That guy can suck a bag of dicks.

I forgot to comment to the op that I generally give zero fucks as to what the locals think of how I approach such things as driving, health care, personal safety and logic. Just because they don't know they are wrong doesn't mean they are not wrong.
I once reversed into a parking space. Locals stopped to see wtf I was as doing. It really confused the security guy - he didn’t know if I was coming or going.
