My take on the "No" vote is that they are trying to defend what they see as male privileges or male territory.
I was at an event at the Royal Selangor Club in KL recently. The Long Bar, which has remained very much the same for 128 years, has a few traditions; one of them being that women and kids may not enter. They can enjoy a drink on the adjacent terrace, but not in the bar. A few Aussie ladies took umbrage at this and - part jokingly, I expect - were considering storming the bar and demanding service. I asked the steward, who I'd been chatting with, what would happen in such an event. He told me that they would simply close the bar for the evening (effectively kicking us out) and that it would be a long time before our club would be welcome back again.
