Moving to Cambodia from NYC.
Hello everyone, this is my first post. I've been doing studies on my potential move for nearly a year now. Checking which country's culture and visa options are for me, cost of living etc.
I need to make a decision and just fucking do it. I'm 26 currently, have a background in blue-collar trade work. Served in the US army and collect $870 a month for life.
I would like to move to Cambodia to save money, earn an online degree from the US while keeping my living costs low.
I was told I can earn $600-1200 a month teaching English at language centers in Cambodia with no experience as an American. This income coupled with my military pay from service would assure me a decent living in SE Asia as well as savings.
My question to you folks with experience. Is my plan realistic?
If I secure teaching work in Cambodia for at least $700 a month I'd earn $1500 or sotogether. If I keep my expenses below $950 a month, I can have a decent savings as well as create another side hustle for more money.
Can I do it? Is this possible? Am I being a dumbass even considering this?
Thank you all for reading.

You will have no problem getting a job teaching English if you are clean-cut, well spoken and white. If you are good at bullshitting a resume and pretend to have teaching experience you can probably make closer to 1200/month at a good school if you plan on living in Phnom Penh. As far as earning a degree online in the US... Waste of time and money. Depending on your lifestyle you could easily have a comfortable life here for 1000/month, it just depends on what you want. If you live in Phnom Penh and want a full "western" lifestyle with all the amenities you have now, it's going to cost a bit more.

Where to visit first?
What type of housing do you recommend and where?
Should I get some vaccinations?

Why does the government pay you $870 a month if you were presumably in the army a short time (age 26)? Did you lose a limb?

Veterans compensation pays you according to what happened to you in service, regardless of time served. Someone who has been in the military for 6 months can collect $3000 a month if they have a documented injury. So it depends entirely on what happened to you and whether you've left honorably.gavinmac wrote:Why does the government pay you $870 a month if you were presumably in the army a short time (age 26)? In my case, I have some back problems and knee problems. But I'm 100% ok, its degenerative so it may get worse later in life.
Is there a pay scale somewhere that documents the various injuries and the rate they go for, like losing a thumb 8/900/month, a middle finger 6/700? There are a few guys here who would join the military and arrange an "accidental" injury just for that. Back pain is a good one.Retspihied wrote:Veterans compensation pays you according to what happened to you in service, regardless of time served. Well, I had to get an x-ray done to confirm some issues on my body before I even got an award letter.logos wrote:Is there a pay scale somewhere that documents the various injuries and the rate they go for, like losing a thumb 8/900/month, a middle finger 6/700? Someone I used to know had the tip of a finger taken off and gets/was getting $850 a month.

Great job getting completely off topic guys... Start off in Siem Reap and check out the temples. You have to do it eventually, might as well get it over with. Siem Reap is a nice city and a good introduction to Cambodia instead of going straight to Phnom Penh. It will ease the culture shock a bit. There are a ton of tourists there and English is everywhere so you will have no problem getting around. As the other guy mentioned, staying in guest houses until you get things figured out is the best idea. You can get a decent place anywhere in Cambodia for under $15/night with AC; or less without. If you plan on settling down in Phnom Penh there are a ton of different expat communities depending what you want to do with your time. I've never had any vaccinations. Unless you want to live in the jungle, I don't think it will be a problem. Just come here and check it out first and see if Cambodia is for you. You will know quickly if it's a fit and you could live on your budget.

It's actually decent enough advice for someone who has never been here. I think Siem Reap sucks to be honest, I was there a couple of months ago for the first time in nearly a decade and it mostly looks crap. Construction sites, "5"Star Hotels, derelict "5"Star Hotels and messed up roads. The center of he town is pleasant enough though. It's a lot easier to navigate than Phnom Penh and there are great places to see nearby. Prices are generally above what you pay in the capital but that's to be expected in what is basically a tourism led town. That's the downside of it, unless you are a tourist or work in a tourism-related field there is very little going on in Siem Reap city. Otherwise the province is actually one of the poorest in the country too so there are quite a few NGOs working in the area.
