Christmas in Cambodia
Christmas in Cambodia
This is my first holidays time being here. I’ve seen lots of Christmas stuff around, mostly in a commercial sense. What should I expect? Anything out of the ordinary here? Do Khmers give their families gifts, etc?
In Cambodian tradition, instead of Santa Claus, little Khmer children await Pai Natal and welcome his arrival by leaving out an offering of a stick of butter or, failing to do so, he viciously steals one of their toes. Therefore fearful local children try desperately to stay awake all Christmas Eve wearing their shoes tied firmly, or alternately with their bare feet stuck in up to a meter of mud to thwart his bitter retribution.

I came to Joma for a relaxing lunch and to get some work done, and they are currently playing Christmas music, which is the exact opposite of the type of music you should play in a coffee shop where people want to be able to read and think.
Christmas in Cambodia reminds me of Christmas in Australia, and I don’t mean because it’s full of Australians. It’s just doesn’t feel “chhrismassy”.
It’s too bloody hot for a start.
UK Christmas - 70s and 80 repeats on TV, awful Xmas songs (apart from East 17), mince pies (no meat!), forced family get-togethers at mums for our perfect family day, too much turkey, -5 outside, snow and where it gets light at 8am and is dark by 15:30!
I’m happy for it to pass me by.

The less Christmas, the better. Though I will be in Sa Pa where it does (rarely) snow. Just not a big fan of the whole commercial thing and there will be no effing "Jingle bells" in any hotel I am in charge of.

I have been doing wrong all these years.
I go to coffee shops to drink coffee.
Well, drink coffee, smoke cigarettes, and ogle girls.

Not really, but if there is one think I am no friend of than it is Christmas music on an endless loop.
Personally, I have never really had the chance to celebrate Christmas much. My parents worked in hotels as do I; meaning Christmas is just another busy day at work.

Just enough to notice it if you are looking, but not enough to be annoying. You can plan a nice Christmas that lasts 2 days, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Lots of nice Dinner options at fancier hotels like Raffles to dress up and meet some fellow expats. I have happily escaped here now for several years with great delight. Otherwise, it begins in the west just after Halloween and persists for 2 full on months.
It is nice to introduce some Christmas to your Khmer friends or Partner. I gave my lady her first ever Christmas Gift, and she was so excited. That was pleasant.

No wonder it's cheaper than you thought, you got the Kenny G option
