Post Office Dramas - whats your experiences.
Post Office Dramas - whats your experiences.
Post your experience with the Cambodia Post here if you have had at least 20 items posted into Cambodia to give some idea of the reliability. (one or two packages is not a good indication)
I been here 7 years and received about 500 + packages.
About 3% of the time I get an email from foreign suppliers stating its been at the post office (Phnom Penh) for anything up to 12 days but the post office has not called me - but they have scanned the label in obviously.
Some packages in the country could never be found when asking at the post office (maybe 1% or less)
Some packages were written in their books which you need to search endlessly to see if it really is there and on a date you can only guess.
The computer tracking number with our name system (we customers can view near counter 32) is not always up to date and excludes some postage methods.
I can pay for EMS and sometimes its delived to my door and other times I must go to the post office and pick it up.
Many times I only paid cheap china air registered etc but it arrived at my door by the EMS moto guy (baffles me endless)
Sometimes I have put in a paypal claim refund for missing package and then it comes 4 - 5 months latter.
I have found parcels sitting at the post office with arrival dates weeks previous.(about 5 in 500)
Expensive items from the US etc must by law have true US$ value on the package - (unlike the chinese devalue) - so a bad move - $300 worth of mine went missing and tracking said its in Cambodia.
A Smart phone from china with a low value snuck through ok.
I have always kept a cool head and keep it civilised with the post office so the missing packages is not a deliberate retaliation issue ... so either its incompetence or theft I assume.
Customs tax - I been lucky as most of my packages are small with low values noted - so no tax.
However if its a bigger size parcel it always grabs their attention and they ussually insist to open it and check.
I think (correct me if wrong) the tax starts at items over $60 - and their is a 26-39% tax on electronic items and cameras.
Tips - ask supplier to note a values you are happy to deal with if they will do that.
- place a second telephone number in the spare line of your adress example " Call 087609785" (most only allow one number after adress and they will not call that number twice if your phone was busy - from my experience) and some stupid sulliers forget to print it or it gets smudged or torn and not readable.
- I recorded all the 5 or so cell phone numbers the post office staff uses and logged in my phone so I can see any missed calls from them.
- Take a screen shot of the sellers price you paid or bring a receipt to prove the value amounts on expensive items.
Provence post offices have proven to be even worse for me with staff only calling when it suits them like 6 - 12 days after it arrived - so it pays to watch the tracking (but some a way behind and not up to date)
OVERALL - 2% went missing or very slow to arrive once in Cambodia.
another 3% went missing in transit is some other country or never left the country.
Posting out of Cambodia I have little experience - one went missing and three arrived ok.

Mom sent me an expensive pair of Diesel Jeans all the way from California for my birthday. Package arrived late and appeared to have been hastily torn open. Inside, not expensive designer jeans, just a pair of dirty mailman pants.
That's like, your opinion, man.

I have had a few hundred parcels sent to Temple Town. Never any drama, never lost anything.

I was told that no address was even needed, just "Hanno, near Angkor Wat" was enough to inspire awe with even senior postmasters.

So how long have you been stalking Hanno and his wife to know this much about them ???
I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

Have had zero problems with EMS via USPS Priority Mail International with tracking.
I've noticed the tracking drops after leaving the US, but the package still shows up in about 2 weeks.
Currently waiting for a FedEx delivery from Hong Kong, should be no problem, I hope.

I get very good service from Phnom Penh EMS with small parcels picked up from Counter 31 posted from China, UK, US, All over really, they are prompt with their phone calls plus you can check at counter 31 computer access if you miss their phone call to check any mail in but not yet available, of course the occasional one goes missing but using Paypal you can always claim your money back after entering a dispute with the sender who in most instances will resend the article, I'm on a first basis with some of the staff there.
100% delivery record in 12 years - I always try to avoid EMS wherever possible, the only thing that gets my goat is the lack of a civilised queue when collecting. If you don't push your stuff to the front you'll still be waiting to be served at closing time. As a Brit and a healthy obsession with correct queuing, one day there is a risk I may go postal at the post office.

I agree, the EMS's got that public office feel, any serious business man would want to avoid. I usually go there as pr. the gf's advice, to arrive around 10:30am, where you still can find a bit of energy from the staff (pre lunch), and without the crowds, often to be seen around late afternoon.
I am looking forward to see the level of service by FedEx from Hong Kong, it being a free delivery on an already exceptional deal, thereby saving hundreds of dollars on the usual shipping fees, across the Pacific.

I've had a similar experience as Rusty, attempting to receive parcels and letters at the main PP post office since 2006. Nearly all have disappeared. Everything i have sent has arrived though, which might indicate that the stealing isn't happening at the PO.
I travel a fair bit, and have the same experience in Hanoi, where 100% of my packages from Europe and the US have gone missing. Luckily I have a PO box in Vientiane, which always works, and if you collect between 11am and 1.30pm you pay no import tax as the Customs guys are at lunch.
