Status of super markets
Grocery shopping and western products have really proliferated in PP in the past few years. Here’s my count/thoughts:
Lucky: Seven branches
Thai Hout: Five branches
Super Duper: Four branches
Bayon: Two branches
Aeon: Two branches
Chip Mong: One branch
Am I missing any?

Yes, has a couple of different things (managed to get some passata) but pretty poor really. Looks very tidy but not much choiceMiguelito wrote:I think he mentioned two of those four options...vladimir wrote:I think supermarket is one word.
Aeon?
Makro?
Thai Huot?
Minimarts?
Anyone been to the chip mong supermarket yet?
cheese selection was ok.
Aeon also has at least one minimart

Aeon has multiple stores. I think they have 6-7 smaller Aeon MaxValu stores, two in BKK1, one in Trasak Paem area and few inside boreys. And then the two bigger stores at malls.Wayward Woods wrote:Grocery shopping and western products have really proliferated in PP in the past few years. Here’s my count/thoughts:

I think Lucky has 9 branches in PP.
There is a brand new MaxValu on the one-way side of 51 just after the shitty side and before that turn nobody knows how to blink for.
Exchange Square is missing from the list but there's a Lucky in there. It's hard to know what you're missing when you don't say what branches you counted.
Home Top
Aeon has promised to build 2 more malls.

Random (Vietnamese?) Supermarkets, dusty, overfilled with stock and a bit dingy, but quite cheap with reasonable selection.
9 Dragon (Rattana Plaza)
One and One, 271
and one in TTP
Also a mention to Cambodia Superstore in PP Thmey/Sen Sok.
Damn, I miss supermarkets ...

So which is best?
Thai Huots - the two on Street 63 are my favorites. Selection, price, quality are top notch.
SuperDuper - used to be the only store I shopped. Now I only go there for the ÁTM. Same brands as the Thai Huots, but they charge 30 - 50% more. Nice stuff, very clean well-run store, but they cater to expats, and they stick it to us.
Lucky - the one on Sihanouk - I have to go there for cat food, but unwillingly. Horrible place to shop. Narrow aisles, always have boxes of product sitting on the floors, in the way. Usually have groups of 4 stockers standing around, doing nothing but clogging up the aisles.
Aeon - very nice, a bit expensive. Great . fresh fish department. Clean, bright, well stocked.
Bayon - not bad, not good.
Thai Huot is the best, imo. Bulk nuts and dried fruit, best prices of any of the markets. Good selection of quality products. No reason to shop anywhere else.

I like Thai Hout - good for cheeses and one or two French brands that I like. But there fresh meat selection is poor. Also there frozen vegetable and fruits are not so good. And there booze is overpriced. Why did they think it a good idea to open another one on 63 jusy 200 yards from the first one? That second one is always empty. I assumed they would close the first one.rgrowden wrote: Thai Huot is the best, imo. Bulk nuts and dried fruit, best prices of any of the markets. Good selection of quality products. Between Aeon and Thai Hout we have things pretty well covered these days, with occasional trips to Dan Meats and Digbys to load up the chest freezer, and Bayon and Lucky Drink Shop for booze.
Those MaxValu mini-marts of Aeon are very good, a big notch above the likes of Smile and Panda in selection, quality and price. The same prices as in the Aeon supermarkets.
Le Marche also good.

I like Aeon, for most purchases, the spacious environment, it's like back home, and bringing the kids is easy.
Bayon for the bulk, imports; mayo, mustard, relish, sausages, beer laos, etc.

Whoever coined the phrase "as different as chalk and cheese". Clearly has never shopped at Luckys

Going into Lucky is like going into a co-op in the 1970s.
