Poipet do and don’ts
Don’t try to cross a car into Thailand!
I crossed the khmer border as usual, then was asked to follow the tourist herd for passport stamping (about 2 hours). As soon as I got back to my car, a very impolite thai official started to give me a hell of a time how I shouldn’t have parked where I had (while I asked before and was told were to put it) and that Thai law absolutely forbided for me to cross in (This is my law! This is my law! You understand? You understand?) The more I asked him why plenty of Khmer cars were passing through in front of our very eyes the more he got upset and impolite. That guy was an absolute caricature of how despicable Thais can be. End result was I had to cross back to Cambodia (another 30min) and was very worried as I was supposed to pick up my wife and kids at Suvarnabhumi the next morning.
Do take the new road from Poipet to O’Smach.
It must be the best driver road in all Cambodia, 200km of a pure heaven! No traffic, seldom animals and human beings, my average speed must have been 170kmh as it took me slightly more than an hour to reach the border crossing where it was a breeze to cross in, just like what I am a used to in Koh Kong.

That sounds like a pain in the ass but I couldn't help laughing. Some people can be such jobsworth cunts. This is my law! This is my law! You understand? You understand?
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Good to know about the border at O Smach. Got something on in Chiang Mai later in the year and was thinking about making a driving holiday out of it rather than flying. Still a jolly long way, though.

The $50 Air Asia ticket from Don Muang is worth it. I've gone through Poipet just one time, it was the horror.
Abusive officials, crowds and crowds everywhere.

Not sure if things have changed but for a little tea money Poipet is the best crossing I've done into Cambodia.newnewnewbie wrote:The $50 Air Asia ticket from Don Muang is worth it. I've gone through Poipet just one time, it was the horror.

You are right, $10-20, and you get a special line. I refused, at the time.
Trying to be the man of the people. Big mistake.

If i remember correctly it was always 200baht tucked into the passport handed to the police at the front of Cambodian immigration and walked straight through. No wait nor special line. Crossed that border at least 20 times.newnewnewbie wrote:You are right, $10-20, and you get a special line. I refused, at the time.

You guys are talking about khmer side of business, which are the good guys, no worries for me there and done in about 5 min. The bad guys are on the Thai side, 200 pax to serve, 3 customs agents chatting with each other’s, about 2 hours queuing before the bad encounter with the angry MF... and I very much doubt any tea money would have helped since I offered.Gin&Tonic wrote:If i remember correctly it was always 200baht tucked into the passport handed to the police at the front of Cambodian immigration and walked straight through. I've also only gone through there once, in 2000. I was leaving the country and valiumed up though so didn't notice any big deal about it.newnewnewbie wrote:I've gone through Poipet just one time, it was the horror.

I believe it was in 2010-11 or so. Waiting for hours, 3 officials, 6 lines that were merged rather randomly. I forgot to sign the slip. Some skinny militant power hungry official screams and shouts at me, totally humiliating. Never again.
Looks to me, you should have "krabbed" him completely out, instead of trying to "explain".Barang_doa_slae wrote:Don’t try to cross a car into Thailand!
