Sihanoukville Expressway construction begins
I think that we can all agree that this is a badly needed road and project. The groundbreaking ceremony was on Friday, and of course there has been some criticism on China's growing influence.
Hun Sen denies Cambodia is Chinese 'colony' as work on US$2b road begins
I don't believe that they have settled all of the land issues yet, but I'm sure that's not holding them back. Four years until completion... just in time for the next election.

One thing I’ve learnt here is there’s a n element of the expat community who will see negative in everything and bitch and complain about it no matter what evidence to the contrary is put before them.
Case in point SHV.

Well it's been 2 months since the 50 or so metres of new road was built for show just off Rd4. Since then nothing, at least not around this end. Now it's a selfie spot.
The route, afaik is mapped out, but people are refusing to thumb print documents to sell the land, as there are complaints the price on offered isn't that which was expected.
They haven't reached our bit yet, but was told that angry villagers nearby ran 4 car loads of Chinese out of the village the other day when they rocked up and asked them to sell up for $2/m2, which is very low, even by current market rates.
In another village a woman sold up for $30/m because she proved she paid a high price when she bought the land recently, others were offered $10 and also told the road folks to jog on and refused to deal with them.
EdC is also been buying land to the side of the planned road and are installing proper sized pylons to run parallel. The price they paid was $37/m for a 10x10m plot.
Got a feeling this project won't run smoothly, unless a bigger chequebook is brought out pronto.

Massive stalker
Land issues aside, how is such an "Expressway" going to function anyway? Ban on shitty farming vehicles, trucks, motos under 150cc, etc? How do they plan to keep cows, dogs and kids off of it so it can actually be driven 'at speed'. If drivers can actually drive 'at speed', what kind of law enforcement of idiotic driving will there be, who will clean up the daily crashes, the list goes on and on.
"Expresswaying" before they can "goatpath" if you ask me! #Hurrumph
Meanwhile at GHQ ...

The land issues will be a nightmare. People are pissed off enough already with the Chinese all over the country.
And it can’t be an expressway unless they ban all contraptions and shitty motos. A proper railway would have been much better value for money.
My mate has just ridden the Chinese train from Nairobi to Kampala. 600 Ks for $10, clean, fast and efficient.
The Chinese invasion will be the death of the regime eventually I think.

'Mr Hun Sen has also repeatedly denied rumours that a Chinese naval base is set to be established on Cambodian soil, giving ships ready access to the disputed South China Sea.'
Helloooo...they already have easy access from Chinese ports, map needed.
And Cambodia is actually less convenient for SCS seafaring than their own existing bases/ports. Plus one has to sail past Vietnam, which is not Chinese-friendly. Bad blood there.
Which idiots write this?

I expect that's what they are hoping people will think. However, it doesn't take too much imagination to see why a base on the Cambodian coast would be highly desirable for the Chinese. For starters, you say yourself Vietnam is the old enemy - nothing like having the old enemy covered from both sides.

Kinda like this. Taken last year on the new giant HS boulevard not far out of the city. Cow herding through traffic going 130 know kph. The expressway should be fun.Spigzy wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 6:00 pmLand issues aside, how is such an "Expressway" going to function anyway? So it will be called "E4" (presumably expressway 4) instead of "NR4"?pedros wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 4:39 pmWell it's been 2 months since the 50 or so metres of new road was built for show just off Rd4. Since then nothing, at least not around this end. Now it's a selfie spot.

On the SHV side, where will it meet up with the present road? Maybe Sre Ambil, or closer to the Airport in Ream? Can't be all the way into town, right?
I thought it goes straight at Sre Ambil and then parallel with the sea past HE beach then to the port, which makes sense for all the trucks.
But then most wont pay the toll will they?
It’ll make the land around the airport drop in value for sure!

Yep, that at least was the plan still last year.
Why all the hate on this? Seems like it will be great for the country. I’m excited for it.
