^ Regarding individuals not having access - it was not that long ago that the general public did not have access to drones etc
Also, how about Countries, like Cambodia, where the vast majority of Public Officials are so poorly paid that they supplement their salary with cash on a regular basis, or seek to impress people with their 'power' ?

of course they have happened since the beginning of time, the point is it is now going to be easier, cheaper and more far reaching.slavedog wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 9:52 amAll of these things have been happening for centuries, since the beginning of human civilisation even. They are the product of HUMAN NATURE. The only thing that has changed is the method.violet wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 8:28 amLet me add a couple of scenarios that might register with some of you.
How about if facial recognition gets used to track who journalists are meeting with to get their stories?
How about if facial recognition is used to track groups of people gathering together, simply because one of the people among you (perhaps unknown to you) is a criminal or suspected. criminal? What if all of the people at a gathering (say, a boat trip) become watched 24 hours?
What if your partner (wife/jealous girlfriend) pays someone to track you and see who you meet?
What if your male ex partner tracks you because he is waiting until you are vulnerable and he can attack?
I do understand mindfulness (many have tried to get me to do it - I gave it a go for a short time). I know my post is uncomfortable for some people to read - that naked sharing of inner mental upset. People find that really confronting. People could do with wondering why that is so. I don't like that I experience at times when feeling unable to impact on a situation - but you know what? that's a feeling experienced globally by many for all sorts of reasons. Those London riots a few years ago, Hong Kong protesters, etc. Those who undertake escapist activities (drugs and alcohol for example) are doing so in order to avoid these types of feelings and thoughts. I face them. I raise them. I speak about them. If we as humans can experience them, then why do we deny that they happen and actively try to avoid them?
So, I have a mind that cares to reflect on things like this. Many reading do not. That's fine. But to then be labelled mentally unstable because of it is rude and inaccurate. Have I been emotionally affected by things? Yes, but I am not mentally unstable and therefore spouting comments.
Anyway. It's a sunny day. Thanks for continuing to post in a respectful way, slavedog.

yep and yep. i've posted about the china situation before and written about it elsewhere.Miguelito wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 10:03 amDo you watch Black Mirror? The Social score episode is pretty alarming - even more so because China is implementing it. Such as, you jay walk and your score goes down, etc.violet wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 8:28 amLet me add a couple of scenarios that might register with some of you.

Liberal democracies should work to protect against a degree of this, but China, Singapore, won't.
But the question about individuals tracking people through facial recognition - well I can't see that happening as they won't have access to any large network of cameras.
your last sentence is shortsighted (with respect)

Unless one is wanted, has outstanding warrants or is of some interest to Big Brother,. I don't think any of you honest upstanding decent citizens have anything to worry about. Infact, it could benefit you when the jao snached ya phone and is caught via CCTV cameras getting beaten to near death.

At least a dozen U.S. National Security Agency employees have been caught using secret government surveillance tools to spy on the emails or phone calls of their current or former spouses and lovers in the past decade https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa- ... 4G20130927
The noise generated by this much information, by seeing a massive populace as potential criminals, proved deafening for investigators searching for a single suspect. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/mad ... less-safe/
Yes, instinctively I am against all this stuff. But when I think about it the benefits outweigh the disadvantages for average law-abiding people. I look forward to transiting an airport without having to queue up and go through all that immigration / security bollocks. And hopefully will not have to fill out so many forms when dealing with authorities.Jep wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 10:43 amUnless one is wanted, has outstanding warrants or is of some interest to Big Brother,. And this is our weakness.... the strive for convenient ease at the expense of so much. Immigration at the redone LAX airport last November was as hi-tech smooth as it could be. It took less than a minute to enter info into this talking AI sort of machinery, receipt prints out,.. done..
I could not believe it..
I was confused, looking around to see if that was it, where's the never ending line..!?!
A kind lady showed me the exit path, clearly I wasn't the only one surprised by the ease and speed of this modern immigration tech stuff.

Ah the old .. if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear line.Jep wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 10:43 amUnless one is wanted, has outstanding warrants or is of some interest to Big Brother,. Erosion of privacy and civil rights in the name of fighting crime and terrorism has been happening slowly but surely over the years. Its drip fed in small steps so the gullible think they are being looked after.
This kind of surveillance hardly ever results in stopping attacks or crime. England has more cctv than anywhere else in the world. It seems to have little effect on stopping the knife attacks or moped robberies in london or the grooming thats been going on for decades in many a city center thats supposedly monitored for the safety of the public.
I dont know what all the cameras are for. But they sure as shit are not there for my benefit.
And slowly but surely more suposed crime stopping surveillance measures are brought in.
How long before the police have the right to just walk into any home they like in the name of public safety. Hey its ok if you have nothing to hide.
Would people become used to not being allowed to password protect their data because passwords slow down the police and only criminals need to hide things.
Its the thin end of a very thick wedge.
Shame on those here with their thinly veiled passive aggressive attacks on violet for trying to educate and throw light on what is going on.
Seems you can be as nasty or invasive as you like as long as you claim its for the other persons own good.
Hmm isnt that an interesting concept.
Its the thin end of a very big wedge.

I take your point - and refer back to one of my other posts. At what point could we have made a decision that would have changed the path we find ourselves on? If we project along possible current paths, how many of them have negative impacts for the masses *you and me - children of etc) that outweigh the positives?Jep wrote: ↑Thu Sep 19, 2019 11:18 amBack about 35? years ago, when NZ govt tol us our Car licence must now have ur photo on it. Of course, there's money to be made in the technology. There's power to be had.
