Cambodia 4th priciest in ASEAN
Cambodia 4th priciest in ASEAN
According to global rankings, not me.

Obviously Singapore tops ASEAN. But Cambodia above Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia?

It won’t surprise anyone to learn that the expat cited in the article doesn’t appear to exist on Facebook, despite being contacted by Khmer Times on Facebook Messenger.

Surprising that it's so expensive.
The expat quoted in the article very much exists btw and is well known.

All these ranking are to be taken with a grain of salt without knowing what is in the shopping basket. Imported foods are more expensive in Vietnam, as are international schools. Rents are maybe a tad lower in Vietnam, as is eating in restaurants.

0.5l imported quality beer 80-90cents, 1kg sliced ham $8, 1 whole sandwich bread $1,25, 200g Nescafe red cup $5, 1kg. large hot dogs $9, pack of 10 eggs $1.50
Try that back in the homeland.

Again, you do not know the criteria. I can go to Angkor market, buy 0.5l German Hefeweizen, 1 kg of Serrano ham, 1 whole whole grain bread, real coffee, German sausage and 10 fee-range eggs and my bill would probable be over $200.newnewnewbie wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2019 8:14 am0.5l imported quality beer 80-90cents, 1kg sliced ham $8, 1 whole sandwich bread $1,25, 200g Nescafe red cup $5, 1kg. large hot dogs $9, pack of 10 eggs $1.50

Sure, flying business class is also costly in any country. But as a budget conscious family, we are getting considerably more mileage on everyday items, compared to the budget super markets back home.
A decent quality imported beer there is $+2 for 0.5l at least. $1 will only get me 0.33l of boring locally brewed budget lager at most.
Cooked ham, 12 slices 200g. $4 (lo quality, special offer)according to a major online supermarket.
Quality of some items such as bread is better though.
As for topic, don't know about Vietnam, but Bangkok markets seem bit more pricey than here afaik.

Sure, but I have seen expat surveys where the rent was pegged as 3K or something ridiculous as that.

In developed world Ireland, i said in developed world Ireland (oh who cares you twat), i can buy a whole 1.6kg ginormous fucking chicken in Aldi for 3 effin euros, washed down with an 8 pack of large guinness's for €10.
Wine for a few euros a bottle.
Cheese, oh dont get me started about the price of cheese. €2 for a huge slab of cheddar.
Decent basalti rice at 90 cents/kg.
And rather splendid red grapefruits at 90 cents for 3. Now i bet you can't get them over there?
Primark T shirts for work made in Cambodia , Bangladesh or Myanmar at €2.50 a piece. Bwahahaha!
The only real expense here compared to SE Asia is rent and eating out. Oh, and focking car insurance. The conts. Think lizards..
2nd hand cars are dirt cheap though.
I swear i see more backpackers in Ireland than Thailand now. The region will be in trouble once the big bang comes i reckon....

True that Aldi is dead cheap. They are running at a loss atm. but good for price,
Looking at the specials for this week online, at my old place, and it's a bit more
than Ireland sadly.. so $4.50 for a sixpack of 0.33l local budget brand (export 5.4%)
deli meats on offer $1.70 for 60 grams, (1000/60)= 16.6*1.7=$28 pr kg.
Recommended red wine starting at $8.66 fo a 'Terzetto" French.
Bacon 100g $3.67
