I’m absolutely not victim blaming, but with these two recent incidents I do hope that foreign (especially female) tourists are careful about walking back alone to their accommodations, which they might not be familiar with, at 3 AM after a night partying. Unfortunately, it’s not a guaranteed right here, or in any country, to be able to do that safely.

You'd hope that people are not daft enough to go swimming at 4AM after a beach party.Miguelito wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 12:08 amI’m absolutely not victim blaming, but with these two recent incidents I do hope that foreign (especially female) tourists are careful about walking back alone to their accommodations, which they might not be familiar with, at 3 AM after a night partying. None but ourselves can free our mind.
News just in the CPU are coming down to assist with an investigation and autopsy. .
Sad. I saw the unedited pictures by mistake and it reminded me of the pictures of Hannah Whitheridge which I also saw by mistake. What can’t be unseen etc. (damn you Asia and your dead pictures!) (she was clothed by the way)
RIP young lass.

The word got out... The amount of people believing in the "coastal sleepy towns of Cambodia" and falling for the Khmer Rouge "pity me" tourism is decreasing. I should say, the Angelina Jolie effect is fading. I just came back from Switzerland, and most people I've met there that visited Cambodia said they would never go back. Why? The arguments were always the same: unfriendly locals, constant feeling of insecurity, the country looks like a giant landfill, the only thing worth seeing is Angkor Wat, and there is simply no nature left.Alexandra wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2019 4:10 pmReading international news about Cambodia provokes the strongest déjà vu. When they're done with this bad look they'll go back to the usual bullshit about sleepy towns and Khmer Rogue. Do you see what I mean?

Social media allows for the rapid distribution of information. The rapes, murders, mysterious deaths, thefts, and drug overdoses are deterring people from visiting Cambodia, and I completely understand them.
Anyways, poor young woman. I can't even imagine what her family is going through right now. Crazy.
Unfriendly locals?!
There’s a smile and wave on every corner be it an old man, young teen or child.
Maybe they’re a bit jaded in the tourist spots, like Angkor Wat, but that’s to be expected when you have so many white privileged tourists ambling around.
I think you’re getting confused with Thailand. That’s where most people die - tourists and expats - just we never hear about it much.

Unfriendly locals and a constant feeling of insecurity? Says more about those visitors than anything in reality. Sure, I agree there is a serious litter problem but if they think Angkor Wat is the only thing worth seeing they must be very unimaginative or uneducated.Ginkgo Biloba wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 11:22 am

Not really. It says a lot about the country if those arguments tend to be recurrent. They personally think that Cambodian people are unfriendly and that the country isn't safe, and that's their opinion. Calling people unimaginative or uneducated simply because they don't see any beauty in Cambodia is bit strong, don't you think? It would be like me calling you narrow-minded and short-sighted simply because I don't agree with you. I wouldn't dare doing that. That would be boorish of me.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 12:03 pmUnfriendly locals and a constant feeling of insecurity? Says more about those visitors than anything in reality. One of the women I met in Lausanne had been to all continents multiple times and was by far one of the most rational person I had ever met. I am sure she is far more imaginative and educated than the both of us combined. She, and the rest of the people I met, made comments that can't be invalidated simply because it goes against your way of thinking. To each their own.

The people I've spoken to often said that the smiles were fake. There was nothing genuine about the attitude of the locals.
From my personal experience, Thailand has a lot more to offer than Cambodia as far as tourism is concerned. Sure, the Thai Baht is high and the Thai can be absolutely horrible in comparison to Cambodian people, but tourists and expats dying in Cambodia seems to get more international media coverage than tourists and expats dying in Thailand. Go figure.

Anyone who feels unsafe all the time here has obviously led a very sheltered life. Imagine how they'd feel if they actually went to a dangerous country? Poor precious things.

So you’re not actually living in Cambodia or have even been?
Cambodians are the most friendly SE Asians I’ve met. 30 years ago even the Thai’s smile was jaded and I could feel a sense of foreboding to the attitude towards whites. Cambodians are not at the stage yet.
Of course Thailand has more attractions. It’s larger with a massive population and hasn’t been savaged by a recent war. It also gets four times as many tourists.
As always if you like it so much then stay there with pucket richard. You can be best buddies and mention how great Thailand is at every opportunity.

Mh. It'd be more like "the people at the conferences I attended". I do live in Cambodia.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 2:37 pm“The people you’ve spoken to” in other words “a bloke down the pub said”Ginkgo Biloba wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 12:30 pm"So many white privileged tourists" waw...YaTingPom wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 11:43 amUnfriendly locals?!

I find them friendly as well. Like everywhere else, there is a lot of bad apples, but overall, I find them quite simple and cheerful. However, that reputation (being welcoming and smiley) is deteriorating quite rapidly abroad. Read what you wrote: Cambodians are not at that stage yet. They're slowly but surely getting there.
Exactly. Thailand is much larger and is far more populated. Vietnam has also been plagued by a war and colonialism. Rwanda was also subject to a genocide. Yet, these two places are far more developed and cleaner than Cambodia. Vietnam gets far more tourists than Cambodia. I don't know about Rwanda though.
I think you meant "Phuket". I have zero interest in living in Thailand, nor do I have any interest discussing with a person whose best argument is "you don't like Cambodia, then leave." What will be your next argument? Build the wall? Lock her up?
Anyone been to Koh Chlam where the body was found? It seems to be a good diving spot.
