Is Khmer food spicy?
I used to say no.... but I’ve been in province for the last month with the Missus and now I think it is. Not like Thai or Indian, but they throw chilis everywhere.
What thinks you?

Khmer food is everything, salty, spicey, sweet, sour, the works. If you haven't tried chicken soup with a pickled lime Jep , you should as it could never be described as bland. And what about the marinades for bbq pork, bland? No way, likewise all the peppery dishes.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

It seems to me the younger generation here tend to eat a lot more spicy food than the older generation who are accustomed to some pretty uninspired food. I think its evolving to be a bit more spicy and exciting for sure.
I personally need the soy sauce+raw chili to make the usual fare edible. Let's be honest, the stuff smells like somebody left a gym bag in a car for a week, and looks like a dog threw up on a plate. But add the magic soy/chili sauce combo and wolf that stuff down!

I like the old Thai prik nam pla on the side, but with finely chopped garlic and ginger in it. Often use soy sauce instead of fish sauce.
I think that maybe the poverty and then the Khmer Rouge years actually made people enjoy munching on those tiny BBQ chicking bones and deep fried spiders.

The only thing I miss about khmer food is the convivial preparations that go with it. Watching the brothers neck a duck or chicken in the dirt next to the kitchen while the women pound chilli and lemon grass in a pestle, clean bundles of morning glory and chop and dice assorted vegetables, uncles sinking endless cold tins and legions of mangy dogs scratching their balls. Lovely.

How does a dog scratch its own balls? Or do you mean that you were scratching its balls?ricecakes wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2019 5:36 amThe only thing I miss about khmer food is the convivial preparations that go with it. I'm with canuck and Spigzy on this. I just can't enjoy the stuff.
Yes, it's getting spicier, but full of sugar too.
