Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville
Is there any place nice to stay there, and is it a pleasant experience to visit the beach these days? I have been but it has been a number of years and just going by what's in the news I wasn't planning on taking my kids there. But two were born in Cambodia and we visit often but all they know is the village and the city and not the beach. I would like for them to see the beach but would only go if there is a nice/safe place to stay. We are a bit of a Marriott family. Is Otres good? Last time I was there I think I stayed at the Marlin Bar when old Aussie Richard had it, or the Snakehouse, but obviously wouldn't do that again. Coming again in June for my wife's brother's wedding and considered a trip to the beach.
Also - we were considering flying to Phuket, or Danang to stay at the Sheraton there. Anyone been to the Danang Sheraton that has any input? Thanks.

I haven't stayed at the Sheraton Da Nang but I've been to a few buffets there and yes it's a nice hotel if you like HUGE generic 5-star hotels. All of the resorts along that part of the beach are quite isolated in the sense that if you want to eat somewhere else then you need a taxi.
An Bang beach in Hoi An is a much better choice in my opinion. There are no high rises yet...

There's cool little bars and restaurants all along the beach and there's lots of places with much more character. Here's a good example of a some of the villas and rooms at http://anbangbeachside.com/ (I have no connection to the place)
Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa Danang and Four Seasons Nam Hai - Hoi An would be my choices for 'branded" hotels for families.

Going to Sihanoukville will only leave you disappointed and regretful.
The SHV of Richard of the Marlin and the Snake house disappeared 10 years ago. The demise of the place continued apace and increased exponentially since 2017.
It is totally different ..... and crap.

It's totally different kind of place now days if your last stay was at Snakehohuse. Probably might want to wait year or two still before going there. Once they get the roads sorted out and most of construction finish it should be ok again.backhome wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 4:57 amIs there any place nice to stay there, and is it a pleasant experience to visit the beach these days? If you are a Marriott type of guy then the good news is that Marriott should open in 2023-2024 in Sihanoukville. Already this year Novotel and Wyndham will open their first properties, Intercontinental and couple other big international chains are opening too within next two years. So there is now wider selection to choose from when it comes to where you want to stay your nights,.

Thanks we stayed at the Marriott in Phnom Penh last summer and it was perfect for what we wanted. We would definitely hit Snooky once the Marriott opens down there, but based on the feedback so far probably not until then.rogerrabbit wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 8:15 pmIf you are a Marriott type of guy then the good news is that Marriott should open in 2023-2024 in Sihanoukville. Wow thanks. That's priceless. We would stay at one of these ones you mention in Hoi An. I assume I can fly from PNH to DAD, and then short transport to Hoi An?Hot_Pink_Urinal_Mint wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2020 9:01 amI haven't stayed at the Sheraton Da Nang but I've been to a few buffets there and yes it's a nice hotel if you like HUGE generic 5-star hotels. Danang to PP requires a stop at HMC. I actually did the journey from Hoi An , taxi, to Da Nang to HMC, flight, to PP another flight a few years ago. . The whole journey took close to 12 hours.
If you want a beach in Cambodia Koh Kong has the best and quietest beach, or it did three years ago. Not sure about fancy hotels though!

There is direct PP to Danang connection. Cambodian Angkor Air flies it 5 times a week.horace wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 2:08 amDanang to PP requires a stop at HMC. If you're with somebody you dig, Le Belhamy hotel on the beach near Hoi An was, I hope Is, great. It was built with Russkies and Chinky chonks in mind but they seem to have stopped coming.
Take one of their pool villas on the beachfront.
It may sound silly having a private pool on the beach but the sea around there can be pretty uninviting, though beautiful. And it gets bastard hot.
For cheaper/more lively places, Hot Pink's recommendations are good.

Sihanoukville was always a shithole but it was our kind of shithole and I loved a good 22 years of regular visits until it turned into somebody else's kind of shithole.
