Opening a Mini-Club Bar in PP
I like all that music. But I just wonder whether the problem is that most expats of the generation you're aiming at just don't go out that much, and when they do go out, don't want to go dancing. I think I'm a fairly typical expat (could be wrong) and can't see anything appealing in the bar you describe. Another problem is that people don't need to go out for music now; everyone has fast Internet and a streaming service - gone are the days of gathering around jm's pc in Garage Bar searching through the great collection. I think people just listen to music at home, and go out to socialise, a bit of background music is great, but music doesn't need to be at the main point.

Certain bars (Yellow for example) let you use the keyboard to choose your songs.1999 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 7:48 amWell, you nailed it! This is exactly the kind of music i wanna play... Miss that here...Visser wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 6:14 amYou are thinking of the same old "classic rock" garbage they have been playing in SE-Asia since whenever. I use to quite enjoy the likes of CCR etc untill I came to Asia.patcan wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:31 pm60s, 70s, 80s music is everywhere...
Has to be to attract the 50-70 year olds...
Not sure how may of this age group are into dancing.
Creating a space like an apartment....sofas, coffee tables...Not sure what this means...
Too many bars to choose from now.... If making a profit isn't a priority... go for it... A nice little hobby I guess to meet old and new friends
But where do you hear the Crusaders, Curtis Mayfield or anything made by Nile Rodgers?
How often do you hear the Smits, Police, Cure, Specials, Duran Duran or New Order?
Most places cater, music wise, to either a young or boomer crowd it seems.
Al green, Marvin gaye, Prince,.Gil-Scott-heron, Brian Eno, Bowie,Joy Division, Nina Simone, The meters,Bauhaus, Sly etc etc..
Got 45 000 Song...
And i' m sorry i see how people react in club when they play classic songs, even the young got it, People are fed up of the same electro and commercial shit they play everywhere!
With the right crowd a good time can be had by playing quality requests and keeping the crap most of the staff want to hear off.
I would open a bar and play rap music. Anything from Stormzy and j cole, Tyger, public enemy, epmd and going back to 20 year old Eminem. I have three Khmer women in the house, the youngest only 8 and they now love rap music.
And reggae of course. Listen to the version of wish you were here from alpha blondy. Spotify has revolutionised listening.
Anyone in Phnom Penh playing this stuff, I doubt it. Seriously cool, and it would keep Playboy and Ricecakes away.

Make it similar to LAB Bodleian but situate it north of Sihanouk Blvd say street 174, 178 or perhaps Eden Gardens.1999 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 10:05 amHi everyone,
I'm planning to open a bar in Phnom Peng.I' m aware of the number of bars out there and the percentage of failure is high.
So, my idea is to open a Bar/tapas/wine..Great cocktails...with a little dance floor for people who like classical songs.
I' am a designer and i want to create a space like people are coming to a friend' s appartment rather than any of the bars we can find out there...
What do you think?
Thank you

Good luck with that! One of the biggest issues, and there are many, are unscrupulous landlords. If you’re a real success, he’ll take note of that, and up the rent at the first opportunity. There’s no guarantees with leases, but best to try and get as longer lease as possible.1999 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 10:05 amHi everyone,

However, i live here for 5 years now and as an expat i really miss a bar with good music /60' s/70' s /80's Funk, pop, rock....
I love dancing but i m fed up of all these commercial shits we get in most of the Night clubs.

Having said that, there used to be a cabaret style format here, with Khmer as well as western live music and dancing. There were even hostess girls there, that you could pay $5 for dancing for the duration, and extra curricular activities, if required. Does anyone remember “Golden Boss”?

Golden Boss, on the riverside but right up North near the CDC building, opposite that other Khmer nightclub that was on a boat (not Pontoon the other one) ??

I was talking about that boat nightclub the other day. Do you remember they had an overly physical and attentive male washroom attendant?

I remember Golden Boss. But there was another one such WYN describes on Monivong, somewhere near Pyongyang restaurant. I think it also had Boss in the name. It was popular with upper echelon / French educated Khmers, who would have a jolly time of it dancing the waltz, rumba, cha cha and the like. Good fun.

If you want your idea shot full of holes ask for advice on a forum like this one. To hell with what people say. If you can see it, believe it and you are willing to put your all into it you can do it. Don't be afraid to fail. The thing is will it send you packing if you do? And does it matter to you?
