Lap Top or Desk Top - which is better / more cost effective
They are much more vulnerable and tend to cause complete data loss when they fail for example in a country like Cambodia where the power suddenly goes out every now and then.

how would power outages affect a laptop with an internal battery?
When my hd died last week lost one partition (the drive with windows on it)
as my new ssd is partitioned as well,
i'd still only lose that one drive with windows on it

Cambodia has fried 2 of my laptop motherboards. Only one suffered complete data loss but both needed motherboard replacements.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 24, 2020 2:09 pmhow would power outages affect a laptop with an internal battery?
The battery doesn’t necessarily protect against electricity surge or outage if it’s plugged in.
Regardless of it having a battery or not, SSD is more vulnerable and when they fail you will lose everything on it. When a traditional HDD fails you normally lose individual sectors.
The risk is part of the price for speed. With backups of important data it could be argued that losing a drive once every year or two is not too big of a deal.

Seagate has a 3.5" series called "Video Surveillance". Name pretty much answers the question regarding suitable uses. HDD is about half the price of SSD. For other uses definitely use solid state.

You dudes do realise that Scoffer probably thinks you have to put a bunch of 9V batteries in a laptop every 2 months, so waffling on about HDD vs SSD is like teaching algebra to a monkey. The man needs to send three or four hundred bucks over and get the wench to go to the store and pick something up.

That's what backups are for.
That said though, I have had only one SSD fail and that was back in 2012 when they were relatively new and not so reliable. Over the years have lost count of the number of HDD to fail.

"Goodness me! Now STD free..."
I said in PCs. Typically storage for CCTV would be in a server/NAS.

In theory yes, though the practical side is, it'll require A) a PC to start with a pi (4), because the SD card needs to be initialized/programmed and B) it's not so easy to get up and running with a pi (4).
Guys get real, it's Scoffer, not Einstein. Plus he has to explain his solution to his Khmer wife.
As far as he's concerned raspberries are small red fruit and a solid-state drive is trying a new car when you're sober.

And, they are a pretty shit desktop replacement.

raspberry Pi 4GB plus correct PSU plus SDcard about $80 and another $10 for a case. $90
I5 3rd gen 8GB $135.
Depends on what you want to do with it , but the desktop is much more versatile
