More begpackers
I saw 2 Western guys at the junction of 598 and 337 Tuol Kork when I was going to supermarket. When I was coming back they had separated and 1 was standing on 337 with a cardboard sign written in Khmer - pretty much the same as the girl on Monivong a couple of months back. It said, (in Khmer) I'm travelling without money please help me...
I tried to speak to him in English but he pretended not to understand.
In the 2 mins I observed I saw 2 people give money.

Probably the same one I saw at that spot a couple of weeks ago. I saw one not particularly wealthy looking khmer chap hand over some reil in the time it took for the lights to change.

Didn't know that was a thing... to travel the world to beg. Going to try to wrap my head around that now.

It's genius.
You get a cheap holiday and locals get good karma by donating to a 'needy cause'

The Riverside goiter guy was a famous beggar that refused surgery for many years because he supposedly didn’t want to lose his only way of earning money. An Australian couple convinced him to have surgery and raised the funds a couple of years ago. The surgery was unsuccessful and he died.techietraveller84 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 22, 2020 8:31 amYour link led me to a sight I'll never unsee. Thanks.

It was well-known before that that he had refused surgery because he was told it was too dangerous.Alexandra wrote: ↑Wed Apr 22, 2020 1:07 pm

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

He was one of the sorrier looking beggars around. I never saw him bothering anyone, but they would pay for him to go away as it was quite hard to look at him. The worst was the guy with the acid burned face who eventually hung around Tuol Sleng Museum. He was absolutely horrifying to look at and would follow you around till you gave him some money or just got far enough away. He had some kind of accident while working, it wasn't from a bomb or anything.
There were loads of disabled beggars around before, I don't see so many now. Here's a remarkable story from 1995:

And an interesting perspective from a "French Cambodian" in 1993:

And a very reasonable piece from a local man in 2011:

Flappie died? That’s pretty sad. The Toul Sleng guy was a horror show. He worked in a battery shop and they kept the acid on the top shelf....
