The irony didn't escape me using the guest function to bitch about the guest function(or, well, bitching about people bitching about the guest function), petty squabbles are par for the course on forums but my internet time is limited and I refuse to bury my nose in my phone in public, was just a little irked wading through 13 pages, my whinge did come with a recommendation but point taken, I do have a handle and could log in more often.Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 8:42 pmThen sign up as a normal poster and say as much....or, post as your normal logged in self and stop whinging. Half the guest posters think they are being clever and posting as "guests".Beef Supreme wrote: ↑Wed Jul 08, 2020 7:57 pmI like the guest function but maybe you can try vetting it a little better, half this thread has been about the guest function, at least move all of it to it's appropriate thread. I don't mind things going off topic, or even a couple posts of the last two dotard owners going off on each other, it's funny for a minute, but an interesting thread got rooted because of the guest function.Alexandra wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 12:21 amYes, but in those cases we can just reject the guest posts or change the nicknames. It’s not a hard decision for mods.Miguelíto (Guest) wrote: ↑Wed Jul 01, 2020 12:17 amOkay, but it might take a sharp eye to notice the difference between Miguelito and Miguelíto or something similar.
Guest posts must be approved and regular members’ posts are published instantly. The fact that we have to moderate a post by “MigueIito” with a capital i instead of lowercase l for example makes it very obvious.
If Guest nicknames are abused I will just remove the function to set a nickname and randomize it for you, but I don’t think there’s a need to make a problem out of it at this point.
I have several technical solutions in mind and it wouldn’t take long to apply if necessary.
My opinion for what it's worth, carry on
Not really.
Never quite understood the commentary many moons ago with the accusations of KIR reading peoples PMs etc - as many have already said - why? What more could be gleaned than if you just read their posts?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:02 pmI don't remember that. He might have revealed the contents of the PMs he received to others but that's not quite the same thing. I knew him and he wasn't a tech guy at all. He knew how to use Word, Excel and a bit of Wordpress. He had no idea how to use image editing software or anything about coding. He was totally dependent on others for all that stuff. He had the whole database stolen off him at one stage that sent him into a total frenzy. It's nonsense to suggest that he was reading through acres of data to find PMs.
In saying that, I do recall one thread, and I certainly don't know what to search or where, where someone did post PMs of another person, which caused a bit of a shit storm. Although KIR may not 't have had the IT knowhow, he did have the Boy Wonder as well as Agrippa by his side for a while..............
hit and run huh?
how about kick in the balls and run
how about kick in the balls and run
KiR didn't do anything amazing. He'd just change people's passwords so he could get in.

I'm completely satisfied with Alexandra's reply, as it's an honest reflection of the technical realities - someone will always have direct access to the DB where everything is stored and you ultimately have to trust them enough with whatever data you choose to submit.scobienz wrote: ↑Thu Jul 09, 2020 8:47 pm
Yes. Or at least it would be beyond the capabilities of most forum owners. But Alexandra has explained it better than me. She of course is an IT guru and would know all about accessing the database, whatever that is. All of that stuff was beyond me. And most likely beyond Kir.
If you genuinely think admin is interested enough to read the mad private ravings of 440 members, most of whom are barely lucid on the public forum, you’re nuts.
What I don't like is forum owners claiming that it's impossible to access users' PMs. In the best case, what they actually mean is that the forum software doesn't readily give them access and that they know of no other way around and/or have no interest whatsoever anyway. In the worst case, they are deliberately misleading their users.
I'm not saying that you fall (fell, as it were) into the latter category. But the fact that you have limited technical knowledge and relied on someone like Buscador (who might or might not be a top bloke) to manage the system for you simply means that you are in no position to make the claim you made.

"She of course is an IT guru "
and she thinks that the "means of preventing automated form submissions by spambots."
is something more useful than just pissing off genuine users.
i figure if one knows how to build a spambot these petty questions would be completely useless to stop the spam if any.

Haha, are you seriously suggesting people swap email addresses and phone numbers via PM's?
If anybody wanted Alexandra to obtain a complete profile of them, and make some cash on the side, that's the way to go.

You “figure”? If the CAPTCHA wasn’t effective we wouldn’t keep it in place. The CAPTCHA together with our spam filter stops nearly all spam. It is very rare that we receive any spam at all with those measures in place and that is a huge relief for mods.useless wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 8:33 ami figure if one knows how to build a spambot these petty questions would be completely useless to stop the spam if any.
The solution works, there’s no need to speculate. If you are so annoyed by it then you are welcome to create a user instead.
Wow KFF, do you think I would make a significant income by selling your provided email address on the side? You’re much stupider than I had ever imagined.kungfufighter wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 9:50 amHaha, are you seriously suggesting people swap email addresses and phone numbers via PM's?

No, I don't. But it is possible. More importantly the opportunity to track someone via their mobile number I aIso doubt that you'd be bothered to do that either. I thought the rest of what you wrote was excellent. Just pointing out that bit. I wouldn't post that info over pm myself. But each to his own.Alexandra wrote: ↑Fri Jul 10, 2020 10:54 amYou “figure”? As to who is stupidest: time will tell.
I've already been right about Johnson and it looks like HCQ is an effective treatment etc Not that I was saying it was one way or the other.
Up the workers!
And as both Alex and I have explained, if he did that the poster would know immediately. Which would make it a dick move and self defeating.
I’m not one to protect KiR but this is urban legend.
My previous password was given to me by Playboy after I took a year's sabbatical having got in a sulk about something, can't remember what, and current one by Alexandra after I took a 2-month sabbatical having got bored of KFF.440.
I didn't change the first and probably won't change the current because I believe they behave ethically (and I can't be bothered).
Just had a look at the very few PMs I get and they mostly involve buying patcan's tasty pickles.
Nobody asks me where to get cheap hookers and drugs although I could advise quite comprehensively on both.

Lets see how he did it.
1.)Backup
2.)Change password,
3.)Snoop etc..
4.)(sometimes) Restore backup to cover up. Other times just ban user for doing, posting, messaging in an anti-Pete way
Not urban legend.
