Introducing Guest Replies, aiding hit and run commentary by lurkers
We have added a Guest Reply feature to the Khmer440 forum. It allows people to reply to forum threads without first needing to register an account or logging in.
The Guest Reply feature resides under the last post of a thread, in the same place that logged in users normally see the Quick Reply feature.
Posts made by guests need to pass spam filter checks and be approved by a moderator before they are published on the forum.
The feature makes it easier to contribute information and to leave quick commentary and is especially helpful for those people that want to participate only for a short period of time or ask questions quickly.

Interesting. Testing 1, 2, 3. Testing.
How long before the trolls, especially the great singing ones, inundate you guys and gal?
Keep up the innovations!

Interesting. Is there a process in place to stop guests posting on behalf of established users via use of their usernames?
Also, doesn't this mean a hell of a lot more modding?

So I don't need to know what the capital of cambodia is to post here?

All I can see is itsa venue for people that would have made socks, now not needing to do so>>

I somewhat remember that 440 used allow guest posts once before. I guess either Peter or Scobie turned them off for their own reasons way back.

We did allow them for a brief while back in the early days. It was Pete who put a stop to that, too much hassle and too open to abuse.
Hopefully things will work out better this time around, but we are watching the posts carefully and not all of them are approved

Suitable for automated spamming ?
And I find it inconvenient to have to specially login, instead of the website redirecting me to the login and subsequently to the page I was on. The manual login does not return me to the page, I was intended to reply on.

You should have a thread for the "best of unapproved posts"
And then match the ip address to the real posters login.

You are logged in to Khmer440 in a browser on a phone. You open a Khmer440 link in another app, for example Facebook. The other app opens the Khmer440 link in a separate browser inside that app. Despite being logged in with your primary browser, you are logged out in the browser inside Facebook. It is unlikely that you will login again to comment.Phuket2006 wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 1:08 pmAll I can see is itsa venue for people that would have made socks, now not needing to do so>>
It is even more unlikely that a person who does not have a Khmer440 account will register, login, post, close the browser inside Facebook and login one more time in their primary browser app.
The hurdle to participate in discussion is quite cumbersome for people who don't normally use this type of forum.
There are some websites that try to make it easier by implementing logging in with various social media apps like Facebook and Twitter for example. Those types of solutions force the user into giving up a lot of personal information about themselves that they would otherwise not share through the registration form when creating an account.
I personally prefer to know less about our users, rather than more. I don't like the idea of making it convenient to participate in return for your full name, photo, your friends list and so forth. In my opinion, the less we know about our users the better. On one hand strengthening anonymity allows us to speak more freely without fear that it will affect our personal lives. On the other hand it removes the question of identity from moderator decisions.
In the case of Guest Posts, we are forced to moderate based on content rather than what we think of the individual poster. As fair and unbiased as we try to be, in the end of the day we are human. It is hard to moderate posts without personal bias, but it becomes easier if we have to do so without knowing the real identity of the author. I hope that it can improve the quality.
What what about trolls?
Guest Posts are moderated and need to be approved to be published on the site.
What about automated spam?
This is a technical problem and the solution will be technical. Guest Posting will be subject to the same scrutiny of the same spam filter that protects the signup form and other components of the forum. It doesn't yet, but it will be resolved shortly. I am still tuning the Guest Post feature but that won't affect users. The onus is on me to handle it.

good idea. i have been to cambodia many times, read your forum frequently but would never join.
And I already plonked in a reply without login in.......
You really have to do something about that.....
Fixed, "Post Reply" buttons will now bring you to the login form if you are not logged in and after logging in you will be redirected to the editor to respond on the thread.
