I receive in feeds from multiple media points in Cambodia.
What I have noticed of late is an increase in the number of children drowning.
These are young children - 4 years to 9 years old that are unfamiliar with water and ponds.
Many of these drownings have occurred where land was being developed and holes had filled with water.
For those of you that have family or just friends in Cambodia.
Please take the time to educate your loved ones and extended family of the danger.

I refuse to go out with nothing more than a whimper followed by a small farting sound and a shit stain on my bed sheets..
Just thought I'd share that with you.

I don't think the ponds are from land being developed but rather from the earth being sold and excavated to some rich fucker's compound. What's left is a very deep hole which fills up come the rains.
k440, something to do when you're pissed.

Been working on a project which has been delayed because of the virus thing, but keeping a close eye on the numbers.
This year there have been at least 84 kids (1-17 years old) reported as drowned. 33 girls, 49 boys and 2 gender unreported.
That's almost 5 a week.

I wanted to wax my initial response post after a while, but can't under the current guidelines. It wasn't meant as a dig at scoffer, nor to ridicule the death of kids playing in 'water holes'.Bong Burgundy wrote: ↑Sat May 23, 2020 5:12 pmBeen working on a project which has been delayed because of the virus thing, but keeping a close eye on the numbers.

It is a serious problem, as is the disappearance of children in general. In India, there are many, many children 'disappearing' and there have been for years.
It's amazing how many poorer, marginalised people in SE Asia are simply unaware of how to swim or to manage dealing with bodies of water.

It wasn't meant to be, ole' chap.
But it might have been.
I hope you are well, 'Guest', & thanks for putting me right on the thread.
Seriously, I was wrong & I admitted it.
You were right and that is cool, by me.
Over to scoff. Actually, he has already responded. I like scoff because he responds in the way he knows how.
Take care, 'Guest'!
Also, take care 'swinning' - Just jokes, lads!

Here we are 10 days later, with another 5 kids (at least) drowned. All the stories are heartbreaking, but this report today is especially so:
8:00 am, 4 June 2020. A case of a one-year-old boy, father scavenges for a living, mother in Prey Sar prison. Child fell out of bed and into the sewage canal next to their shack in Village 5, Sangkat Phsar Doeum Thkov, Khan Chamkarmon, Phnom Penh.
The boy was names Rin Thearith, his father, Rin Piseth, 41, and Ros Pheap, 39, is currently in prison in Prey Sar.
Before the incident, the boy's father woke up at 2 am to scavenge, letting his son sleep with three other siblings. When he returned home, the boy was missing and they searched for him. He had fallen through a wall of a house down into a ditch in the sewage drain, and was drowned.
Immediately after receiving the information, authorities went to the scene for an autopsy and confirmed that the boy had actually died from drowning in the canal and handed over the boy's body to the family for a traditional funeral.

It's not just here in Cambodia, but drowning is the second leading cause of death in children (behind automobile accidents) in the U.S., and the number 1 cause of death in children under 5.
From 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day. An additional 332 people died each year from drowning in boating-related incidents.
About one in five people who die from drowning are children 14 and younger. For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
Where can parents bring their toddlers in Phnom Penh to learn to swim? I know there were two Australian women that were teaching, but I believe they have since left.

its very good advise, when we employ our guides and staff for our boats the first question is can you swim? before employment we test there swimming ability, when i was a much younger man,i was out camping along the Murray River,my g/f at the time was from England and was a strong swimmer, after a day drinking beers and fishing i decided to race her across the river,i got caught about half way in a strong current and started losing power, she saved my life that day , i was fit at the time as i was in the Army and a fair swimmer, but beer and water never mix well:)
Many years later i fell off one of my boats in the middle of the Mekong River,up at Kompong Cham, this time sober but also a strong current,in the wet season,it was one of my staff that saved me that day.

In the Khmer publications I read there have been 18-20 deaths from drowning in the past 10 days.
Most of them young children who do not understand the dangers of water.
Truly, I urge all of you to be active in teaching your nieces / nephews, friends next door, or just all the kids in your street to be careful around water.

That is a terrible story about that young lad falling out of the house into the canal ;(
The policeman who helps us in Kep had a 2 year old daughter walk off and drown in a little dam not far from his house. Only takes a second. We rented a villa in Bouung Tumpun years ago that had a fish pond. First thing i did was have my steel guy weld up some grates so our kids who were toddlers at the time would be "safe" Still not perfect but better than a gaping hole of water.....
Something that happens alot here in Australia is parents running their toddler kids over in their driveways ....usually in 4WDs. I mjean.....you woould think that would be impossible to happen right ?

Rated R for Ricecakes
