What Became of the Hard Working Foreigners with few Savings?
Most have a family network. If it comes down to it, they could stay somewhere, eat rice and fish, even have a few 50c beers, teach English and smartphones to the kids, fix motos etc.
If you're a good lad, do good work, people will respect you.

closing the schools was a joke...i have packs of kids running around swimming together..hanging out at each other's houses.
most that could leave left and some of us stayed because we have a little savings and income...
siem reap is going to just become part of Angkor complex ...
perhaps, building the new Siem Reap airport 50km outside of town will allow for casinos ..
the new airport will just cost much needed jobs in town...my days of taking tuk tuk from the airport to my house will be over since I am not going to take a tuk tuk 50km after flying for over 30 hours...
i think I am the only person buying bourbon at my market...better prices than even USA and certainly cheaper than Australia or Euro.
See no reason to go to PP...
keep it

Current thinking is October, but nothing official has been announced as far as I am aware. Although I no longer follow such things regularly
"We, the sons of John Company, have arrived"
The Post article just said 'end of the year' for re-opening, no mention of a particular month.
Personally, whereas I would by now have ordinarily paid next year's fees, I'm awaiting to see what happens. Do I want to pay for four months, possibly longer, of online classes?
Interested to hear what other parents are thinking about this.

I am quite reluctant to pay thousands for online class, the quality is shit and the kids hardly stay focused. If Pubert was in High School already, maybe, but now...pointless. If the international schools don't open on time, I suspect many will close as most guys in my positions also are NOT going to pay for that crap again like last term. A total waste.Pen15 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 4:30 pmThe Post article just said 'end of the year' for re-opening, no mention of a particular month.

This is interesting from above article;
"Chuon Naron said he already has a strategy for reopening schools, and that he would only like to re-open them if they can adhere to high standards."
Which is the same thing I've heard from one of the big international schools... And I'll anonymously cut and paste an email sent out this week to staff of one of these schools;
"...I have some potentially very good news. It is my understanding that the PM has given approval for the school reopening process to start.
In recent speech also H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports noted that the Ministry is preparing for a 3-phased gradual school reopening: During the first phase it is anticipated that only around 10 to 15 high standard schools with high safety standards that can implement the Ministry’s Health Safety Guidelines will only be allowed to reopen and that they will offer blended face-to face and e-learning to minimize the risks of infections.
We have already submitted our request to re-open in a Hybrid on-campus and online school in August and we hope to receive an inspection visit shortly. Whilst this is not done and dusted so to speak and as we know things can and do change it is certainly a positive step towards the possibility of opening XXXX on-campus and online in August."
Whether or not this will actually happen I'm not so sure. What would it say about the other schools that don't meet the standards of "high standard schools with high safety standards"?

What are the odds that the International schools owned by the, shall we say, "most connected" will pass and be open while others will not meet the standard?

I don't know what happened to them really, a whole lot of people just disappeared a few months back. Some might have managed to leave before the gates shut. A lot of NGOs and private companies must have pulled their staff out. Some could be laying low or got other gigs?
Most of the places I grab lunch are empty these days.
I haven't been affected too much, I was a bit miffed when I found last week that the seniority bonus had been postponed till next year. I'm not going to complain when so many have lost their livelihoods. I don't think we have any idea where this is going but things are going to get very messy.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

I am not in Cambodia right now, so can't judge from first-hand experience, though what I do get reported is, the kids seem to be concentrating on the tuition. 2 Out of 3 did their term exam and passed with sufficient results (might be padded, though in classroom ranking, it was sufficient).Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 5:36 pmI am quite reluctant to pay thousands for online class, the quality is shit and the kids hardly stay focused. However, it certainly needs a parent continuously & closely involved, also for making and verifying homework, as far as I understand.
Fortunately all three do seem to have personal motivation to follow the lessons, but all three do complain "it is difficult". The latter an indication, they have positive motivation. Junior is continuously asking when he gets his laptop back (IE repaired after being badly treated, etc). With a laptop, following the lessons is considered to be much easier.
Same. Nobody seems to know where they've gone or heard of any mass exodus.Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2020 9:07 pmI don't know what happened to them really, a whole lot of people just disappeared a few months back. They dwell in the caves. Free rent. Go to market everyday and do emails to beg. It's a rough life. We are not open to nondiscript contemptuous free loaders like Rob. We eat what we can and shag when we can. I've had the virus at least 3 times. Only the survivors survive. Ask Trump.
fwiw..
I moved to Hanoi in 2016 with a then 5 and 8 year old.
Schooling there was *almost* prohibitvely expensive at around USD$15k ++ annually per kid and getting more expensive with each year they moved up. I diod not have an education stipend so it was all on me. Cou
I opted to "homeschool" and by that I mean I paid westerners to come to our house and deliver a VERY loose curriculum with the main brief being the 3 Rs , no religion and peace and love for all mankind etc . Our last tutor was an ELT teacher ( so not a primary school teacher per se ) however she was switched on - and fucking hot too. She was a jamaican model i shit you not. . The outcome was pretty extraordinary IMO. Both kids retruned to Australia far ahead of their grades and are thriving in class. Their NAPLAN scores were off the charts. The flexibiilty home schooling gave us was awesome too. We did 5 days 8am -1pm and took long weekends and holidays whenever we wanted. I was traveling alot regionally with work and took them with me where i could. Admitedly the tutor cost me USD$1700 a month however...it was money well spent.
I am also very blase about education in the early years. I dont think kids learn shit up to 13 or so. Yes...the 3 rs are important early on but the rest of it is just a bunch of waffle. So i was never that hung up about how things would pan out in the mid term when we lived in Hanoi and then again recently when C19 came around and it looked like school might stop for 6 months i was like....meh.....heres a laptop......go for it. Having said all that - i was bloody glad to get them out of Cambodia ahead of high school because lets face it...the schools there are shiteful - even the "good " ones.
If you are worrying about your kids "schooling".......maybe band togtehr with others, grab an out of work ELT teacher and create a mini classroom ?
