My post was in response to LL. isn’t there a possibility that she said and not the writer? I didn’t watch the show so I apologise if I got it wrong

An orphanage with no food to eat.
Thank fuck she doesn’t have to tell the parents…

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Fruit and food was never scarce in Cambodia during the COVID peak, perhaps it is more likely that donor money was.

A couple of charities fighting obesity and diabetes might be useful in the modern Cambodia.
Not sure it would sell so well with donor "community".

I, too, know this woman and have spent time at Geraldine Cox's Sunrise Children's Home. Yes, Geraldine is a larger than life character, although somewhat less so currently following serious illness from which now recovered. I have nothing but good to say about what she has done and what she has achieved and the futures she has built for so many children who would otherwise have had no future at all.
Now to the relationship with the Prime Minister. After her public criticism of him she was "invited" to meet with the man himself for a right royal shellacking and probable cancellation of her visa. Nonetheless, she emerged from that meeting far later than it was scheduled to last for with a small land grant that extended the property they are using and with title to it.
Even more remarkably the Prime Minister instructed that valuable timber that had been confiscated from illegal logging be donated to the Sunrise Children's Home for the construction of the large semi-traditional building located within a large "pond", which in true Khmer style provides cooling in the hot season, and is now occupied by Geraldine.
Why is it that people who actually commit themselves to years of hard work and struggle helping Cambodians, such as Scott Neeson of the Cambodian Children's Fund (CCF) and Geraldine Cox of the Sunrise Homes, and others, attract unwarranted and base criticism from people on this forum who have achieved little if anything in these humanitarian assistance areas?
And, yes, the Sunrise Children's Homes are most definitely worth saving by almost any means.

Given that the Cambodian government just splashed out for a new 30 million dollar headquarters.........and the fact that you can't go 30 seconds without seeing a 6 to 7 figure luxury automobile going to and fro on Norodom.
Isn't it high time that Cambodia started making more of a concerted effort to take care of their own?
Or is it going to be the same old paradigm of Cambodia being perpetually on its collective knees and in constant need of Western aid and handouts for basic social programs and infrastructure?

No, her claims are legit. Super Duper hasn't had seedless grapes for a few weeks now, it's either grapes with seeds (yuuk) or go without. Also no Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, that's when you know it's getting serious.

My closest friends, many of them posters here, know I started and have a small, moribund charity. They were generous in helping me get it started after I retired, but we always had trouble collecting funds for it to keep it rolling. I am forever grateful for their support, then and now.
We ran pretty well with a few tests of the concept with startup funds, most of which came from my own pocket. I never took a dime of funding for personal gain or income and spent over 30k USD of my own money keeping the programs running.
The amount of pure HATE I got from strangers not understanding what we were all about was...shocking to me. What really got me was a few friends, who stated things like, oh, you are one of those now, gonna cash it in, eh....etc.. Then, even from within the NGO community, the hate and constant criticism from folks that I did not know was unbelievable. I gradually learned it really is a tight community, scrabbling over limited funds...and new players were looked on with suspicion and jealousy, especially if their models and programs were working better than others with virtually ZERO overhead (something I specialize in is creating projects that self sustain with little to no overhead). I also think my ideas and programs held a mirror up to some of the larger NGOs and the amount of waste, thus the attacks.
I had a series of large donors that backed out when they heard "rumors", all false, about the charity, myself, etc.. By then I was so punch drunk I didn't care anymore. I gradually down scaled the programs and then shut down when the last employee moved on to greener pastures.
I myself am always suspicious of hucksters in the charity world...my early day encounters with Somaly Mam in her pre NGO days and the circus around what happened there with it later put me off a lot of all of this charity stuff. All the politics and personality cult crap detracts from the purer goal.....HELPING PEOPLE.
I plan to take another crack at it with a newer model and broader concept, but this time with very strong local political support, much like Geraldine. Just waiting on a few things to happen first.
People still need help, the need is always there. I wish Sunrise well, as I know what an incredible pain in the ass it is to keep the ball rolling uphill, feeling much like Sisyphus...

I am of two minds on this, one, much like yours, the other sees the suffering and needs to do something about it (but not ignore the root causes such as corruption).Guest wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 10:18 amGiven that the Cambodian government just splashed out for a new 30 million dollar headquarters.........and the fact that you can't go 30 seconds without seeing a 6 to 7 figure luxury automobile going to and fro on Norodom.

Spot on Felgerkarb.
To operate anything in Cambodia, and any number of other countries for that matter, you need to understand and apply...Realpolitik... Business politics in such countries is all about this and the ...art of the possible...
If this occasionally means...supping with the devil... or ...dancing with the Devil... then so be it.
Nations and international politics are doing this all of the time , either openly or by the ...back channel..
And as for Guest.. Regimes will and do do anything it takes to remain in power and Cambodia is a prime example of this and their spending priorities are driven by this and bugger the mass population. The expensive big boys toys and military symbols have first priority and help to keep the population in their place and the "loyal" military commanders happy.

I suppose it comes down to whether the ends justify the means.
I've tried to be honest and sincere with my NGO fundraising... But look at others sensationalizing stories and getting more donor success than me.
I've had grant writer, partner organizations and journalist 'expand and exaggerate' quotes of mine because 'we know what we are doing'.
It's a fundraising is a house of cards, which Somaly Mam almost demolished... And other current NGOs here are guilty of shaking the foundations

Newspapers and related journals, including the online ones, exist for only one reason - to make a profit. To make a profit you need either sales of hard copies or views of online fora that attract advertising.
Never forget that it is headlines that sell or attract buyers or viewers and the more sensational or dramatic or heart rendering the better.
Journos are an endangered species and the day of the salaried staff journalist is almost in the past and surviving journalists are often paid by the piece or "column inch".
And never forget the axiom...Never let the truth get in the way of a good story... Journalistic "Licence" knows no bounds.
