Trabant drives from Bulgaria to Phnom Penh

A piece of the Eastern Bloc can be seen parked at Friends N’ Stuff in Phnom Penh. Somebody drove the beast of a car all the way from Bulgaria.

Did anybody drive Trabant recently? I can’t remember a car that I’ve heard so many crazy stories about. People had to repair them with duct tape quite often because they would fall apart. At least it was cheap.

Drove to Berlin in '89 when the wall was coming down and Trabants galore, some spewing 2 stroke emissions and rather noisy. On leaving, there was a completely flattened Trabant lying on the Autobahn, having been run over by 45 tonne juggernaut.

I had imagined at least one poor soul was among that wreckage, but back in the UK we saw in a newspaper that very same Trabant. It had actually fallen off a truck and been flattened by a following truck.

IIRC, two Trabants made a journey but only one made it through all the way to Cambodia...many years back now. It was in the papers at the time...most likely the weekend Phnom Penh Post as I recall a color spread in the paper.

About 13 years ago a bunch of travelers drove an epic journey from Europe through Central Asia & China and finished in Cambodia in a few Trabants. One of the tv channels covered it... ‘Trabant Trek’... it’s an entertaining watch if you can find it anywhere.

This was their route...I think the guy who organized it still lives in Phnom Penh...
