I don't know this gnocchi place, I've never been a big fan of gnocchi but if they are good please post the name of the restaurant, I'd like to check it out. Street 172 might be a bit of a semi-abandoned mess populated mainly by grizzly old men and maniacs these days, but there's no need to write the whole street off. Sara Ethiopian restaurant is on 172 and it's a great unique place. There used to be okay places like Sony Side Up too, not sure how many decent places are left but I'd like some pointers.
I never liked the streets around the old Boueng Kak lake much, the platforms by the lake were nice though.
I was down there recently and the streets are all there still, there's just no point in going out on the back anymore because instead of a lake view there's just giant walls and sand land fill. It's still a shit hole where dodgy people try to sell passers-by illicit substances but the restaurants are cheap and there's some great decayed street art around and it feels like another world even though it's only 200 meters from Monivong.
In years to come we'll look back and find all these places hard to identify. It's already getting blurry.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
The place is dolce vita and indeed their 4 cheese gnocchi is incredible as are a lot of their dishesLucky Lucan wrote: ↑Sat Aug 15, 2020 11:38 pmI don't know this gnocchi place, I've never been a big fan of gnocchi but if they are good please post the name of the restaurant, I'd like to check it out. I’ll need to remember for my next visit, I’m a Gnocchi fan. 172 makes me think of cheap not good so I would never try it otherwise.
I like to order it at the Italian place in Kep owned by the little Italian guy who’s a long term expat.

I’m not sure what place Rob means but I had excellent gnocchi at the little Italian place (run by a friendly Khmer guy) opposite Sundance. Damn good pizzas too.
Good to see Ginger is back on the dole in Blackburn. He’s found his level clearly.

The place Rob means is the same one you are talking about. Dolce Vita. Been there many years and yes the food is one of the best on the street. Have had their chicken cordon bleu many a time and aside from an asinine way of plating it rarely disappoints.
Dolce vita is hit and miss. Haven't tried the gnocchi but had pasta which was similar to solidified gunk. The pizzas are about as authentic as, well, a happy pizza. Coffee is good and yeah, it's run by the nicest couple. It's backpacker/teacher fare at best. As per with many patrons, just coz you're eating and drinking for $5, doesn't make it great cuisine.
Yes, it's Dolce Vita.
You have to be careful they don't overcook 'em but by the shape they are clearly home made too.
Beware of the Black Leaf of course and logos, fresh out of Belgium, breaking self-quarantine two doors down.
Getting good gnocchi is a minefield.

It was high time I came back. The black leaf guys clearly need some restructuring if they can't even shake down RobW and Stokely.
Hand on heart I don't think I could self-quarantine for 2 weeks so hope not to put myself in a position where I'm told to, but aside from logos I have met 3 people recently who are not doing it and don't give a fuck.
Seriously, is it highly irresponsible?
I don't think it is after two negative tests within 5 days or so (one pre-departure and one on arrival)
Still normal precautions like mask and social distancing apply. For the rest I believe more in Cambodian beer than in industrial detergent

Maybe we should start a new thread. The K440 mask debaters…..
