The Khmer technique of simultaneously drying and destroying t-shirts
And for the original ordes' complaint: I don't think, the stretching is due to the drying process, though due to the type of washing machine being used. Have a more "Western" common tumble drum front-loader washing machine and the clothing pierces are kept more or less in one chunk. Whereas the common Cambodian washing machine, cheapest, etc, is a top loader, where the drum rotating is around the vertical axis.
Last year, I did have a laundry service, using front loaders and the T-shirts did not get "stretched". Unfortunately, they moved business far away and the next one was Khmer old-style, etc. A little cheaper, though with stretching T-shirts.
Now, I do have my own, el cheapo, one and the T-shirts get stretch a little. When the washing is finished all T-shirts are spread out, nicely layered on the outside of the drum. I think, IF I would load the machine to its specified 10 kg (or more), T-shirt would be stretched more.
Stretching does not seem to depend on the way I dry the cloths, be it hanging upside down, on a cloth hanger, or just laid down on a flat surface.

If you put them on the hanger folded in half they wont dry properly

I don't even feel offended by that silly statement, as I pity people who need to dress up to impress or because their job requires it, especially here in the tropics. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a relaxed dinner in a t-shirt. Try it some time if you can get over your childish reservations.

I don't get how people wear t-shirts in this heat. I find normal buttoned shirts much more comfortable.

Hmmm. I stepped out for dinner in a mid-range Khmer restaurant the other day in (decent) shorts because I couldn't be bothered to go home and change.Alex wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 10:57 amI don't even feel offended by that silly statement, as I pity people who need to dress up to impress or because their job requires it, especially here in the tropics. I felt pretty uncomfortable as I was the only male there in shorts. There were some hot concubines in Daisy Dukes but all the men wore strides and collared shirts.
As they should. The age range of the company you keep is getting up there.
Thankfully they're self aware enough to know that old-man legs, replete with spider-veins and liver spots are not a good look and dress accordingly.

I wear a t shirt with a jacket over it sometimes when I'm channeling my inner Frenchman. I have no idea how the t shirt is washed or dried though, I just put it in the hamper and two days later it appears magically cleaned and folded in my drawer.

I hope you don't indulge in the tasteless smart casual uniform of the usual American: a skivvie (turtleneck) under a blazer (sports jacket), the latter of which is normally loose-fitted.
It's partly because we are in the tropics that I don't wear t-shirts. A button up shirt or polo is far more airy. Looking like one hasn't just finished work on a building site is, of course, an added bonus.Alex wrote: ↑Mon Aug 31, 2020 10:57 amI don't even feel offended by that silly statement, as I pity people who need to dress up to impress or because their job requires it, especially here in the tropics. I'm not getting the polo/shirt keeping you cooler than a t-shirt.
Also out of interest, what sort of age are you polo shirt fans? Outside of polo or golf, aren't polo shirts really out of fashion? Equivalent to still wearing flared trousers in 1985.
I'm imagining you cool cats strutting into the restaurant in your polo shirt thinking your cool as fuck about 10 years after they became a faux pas. Everyone under 60 thinking wtf, is it fancy dress night?

I haven't worn a polo shirt myself for years but don't see them as something that has ever been fashionable or not - they are something that has been around forever. The ones with the giant polo logo are hideous but I haven't noticed too many foreigners in those. They seem popular with that Proud Boys group in the US at the moment. Most men I've ever known don't care too much about fashion anyway. You can look smart without caring much about it at all.

I don't like Polo's either. However, if you want to be immediately accepted in dressed down situations among "important" people, you'd better wear that clothing. Not sure, how that goes on in Cambodia, though in Europe, if you don't you will be stared out.
