Is all of the booze here fake?
Is all of the booze here fake?
In a country with such high duties on imports, there are some impossibly good deals around on foreign booze, how is it possible? There have been a couple of recent things to raise my suspicions.
The other day I had bought a litre of Jack Daniels from Super Duper, looked perfectly legit. However in the morning the dregs in the glass looked like coffee and had left a scum ring around the glass, Cannot ever remember seeing JD do that before.
Tonight strolling past a chain convenience store with a sign outside saying free power bank with a bottle of Teachers. Popped in and got my bottle of Scotch + power bank for the grand total of ................................................ $10.90. How the fuck can that be done?
It's all mickey mouse right? The litre of JD cost $25 btw

Booze duties aren't that high, especially compared with Thailand or Western (European) markets. I'd be surprised if there was fake stuff around in legit shops.
There are some excellent deals on spirits that are legit.
It helps to know what you are buying.
Plus, going to a trustworthy market.
What I have found in the part of Cambodia I inhabit is older inventory that the market has had on hand for a few years..
It is possible to find excellent deals on premium whisky or any other spirit you like.
But, don't be a sucker..
I buy whisky all the time that would be a bargain in most countries including the UK that is priced at what the store priced it when they stocked it.
Off site duty free also has some bargains.
If you had something on your jack daniels..inspect the cork.
I picked up some 12 year old age statement Elijah Craig a few months ago that was discontinued in 2015 and the label on my bottles was changed after 2014..taking the red 12 off the front and black 12 off the back.
They also had some neck tags which were printed in 2009...
I paid more per bottle than they were back in 2010-2014 but, a collector now would kill for a bottle of it.
It is possible your jack has been sitting there for years and the cork is in the whiskey.
A guy should know what jack tastes like..
$25 is actually kind of steep..
I can get a liter of Wild Turkey 101 for $24...I have 4 bottles in my cabinet..
Good luck

I worked in a country that banned legal alcohol.
We made our own by buying jd and jb bbq chips from the murikans then buy uncut sid from the resident expats.
Around a month later, perfect jd and jb and cokes were eagerly drunk by anyone lucky enough to get into our compounds.
Never seen any stains etc thats got to be fake shite from china.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
They used Jim and Jack BBQ crisps and illegal Arabic 90% grain alcohol to make sand dune moonshine
She didnt say crisps, she said chips.
The barbecue chips are maturation barrels that have been reduced to chips and sold as barbecue smoke flavorings.

I have had fake booze more at bars than off the shelf...but a few bottles over the years, mostly in fact, JD.

There are a number of official distributers of all range of liquors that are imported legally and full duties paid on. They are not hard to locate. There are also a number of brands imported which are legit but may not have full duties paid on them. There are a number of reputable liquor stores from which to procure an impressive variety of brands.
Duties are high here on certain items (hello automobiles), but not on alcohol.

I have acquired an incredible Whisky/Whiskey collection this year.
Bourbons are not so plentiful.
But, I was able to find some real gems with 12 year age statements of discontinued classics.
In the Scotch Whisky department the choices are extensive and many are impossible to find in the UK now.
Older inventory and lack of buyers of high end single malts have made it a paradise of Whisky for the avid collector.
My only problem is finding someone to share my drams with who might have his own collection.

Where do you mostly shop? The store that used to be next to Lucky had a great inventory, but they moved and I haven't been back since they moved (I think they moved in front of the Himawari, but I'm not sure). Lucky drink shop is one of my go-to's.Guest wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 3:19 amI have acquired an incredible Whisky/Whiskey collection this year.

I have a bottle of King George V Johnnie Walker, along with a few equal bottles to that, if that stands up...
I did a bit of research and apparently it is normal for JD to go all cloudy if you leave it out.

I had a gig once at the cigar bar in Naga, the King George V was iirc 1200 USD a bottle there. Fine crystal, numbered bottle version.Miguelito wrote: ↑Wed Sep 09, 2020 8:39 amWhere do you mostly shop? "Jim Beam Black - triple aged" is to be avoided at a large supermarket.
