Leaving Cambodia for the UK
Leaving Cambodia for the UK
Does anyone have any experience of leaving Cambodia, especially during these Covid-19 times, and trying to build a new life in England if you've not been home for a few years.
As I don't have anywhere to live, I'm wondering if it's possible to apply for Universal Credit for job seekers allowance and housing allowance before it gets cold in winter.
There isn't a specific place I would call home, so which places would it be easier to pick up work at this specific moment in time.
It would be perfect if anyone has recent experience attempting to go home.

It's going to be tough mate.
You can claim universal credit and housing allowance as soon as you can pass the Habitual Residence Test. So you'll probably need a few months of tenancy agreement and a gas bill or something. Jobseekers is after 3 months residency.
I cannot fathom how you will find a job considering what is going on. As soon as the government can't afford any more to throw money out of helicopters, there are going to be mass layoffs. It's coming. Then potentially a very messy brexit in a few months.
Do you have enough savings to allow you to rent somewhere for a few months and eat etc until you can get some benefits?

Going back to the UK would be my absolute last option for all of the reasons above plus the winter would kill me. Fortunately, I have enough savings to last quite a few years.spitthedog reckons there is work in Ireland but ...
There used to be a charity specifically for broken down expats which helped with the paperwork. However, if you have no connections , I would wait till spring as sleeping rough in the winter ain't no fun.

Bleak is an understatement
because cameroon tried to and failed to apease both the EU and Britain he had to make it so that you had to be a habitual resident in the UK for 3 months before you start claiming benefits, it didn't slow down the eu benefit cheats but it royally fucked brits who fucked up abroad and had to come back to the UK with their tail between their legs.
What are your skills? honestly mate if you make money from the freelance sites your best off staying in Cambo and doing that least the cost of living is cheap. UK economy is fucked well most of the worlds economy is fucked your not going to be able to claim benefits so you'll have to be relying on charity for first 3 months if you haven't got savings.
Unfortuantly if you are coming back to the UK without savings your going to have to grift hard. remember to take back ciggies from Cambodia thats a quick £40 a carton your only legally suppose to bring back one but you can get away with more if you don't fill your suitcase.
Its bleak mate I don't know what to suggest...
I went back in February when I saw what covid was going to do (albeit I thought Cambodia was going to be hit far far harder than the UK I was wrong) I thankfully had savings and work so other than having to stay at my folks house when the country locked down (I didn''t find a place to live soon enough before country locked down) I was alright.

Jeez. Rough situation for you.
I'm completely unqualified to say but maybe you could contact the org. called Shelter too for advice.
Best of luck.
Edit: I heard a lot of fruit and veg farms are struggling to find workers. There are autumn/winter crops like Brussel sprouts. Think that happens around Peterborough but not sure. There may be a website where they advertise for overseas workers. They generally provide ok accommodation.

Keep us posted on the journey.
This has the makings of a thread of distinction if you can afford it.

First - Is this move necessary or can it be avoided at all? As others have stated, EU economies are generally not in good condition and winter is coming up. Compared to sleeping rough in the UK winter, sharing a $100 room on the outskirts of PP sounds like a nice option. And without a decent CV your chances of finding a job are not that great.

...but if you think London and the south east are cold you will die in Ireland. Dublin is relatively warm as it is sheltered by a ring of mountains. The sea is warmer on the west coast because of the Gulf Stream but the wind will destroy you! It's a beautiful country, but it's rare to see the sun. You'd like it there but it's way too cold. What's Morocco like in winter? There must be coastal areas that wouldn't be too cold?
You'll be well looked after if you ever do rock up in Ireland anyway geezer.

^^ Atlantic Morocco in the north was cold but humid and windy. The east was fucking freezing and wet and windy. The desert n mountains were very cold n dry.

Turkey is open and you'll get an automatic three month visa, and if you can teach probably a chance of a reasonable job, but check the schools before you leave. Another option is Moldova, where you get an instant 3 month visa, and its inexpensive to live there. Again Turkish Airlines fly to Moldova, and most other destinations now.
Poor bugger forced back to Blighty. Some good advice there though. I am sure there would be jobs in agriculture with accomodation that would tide you over until benefits kicked in.
Horace is right about the climate in Morocco in winter but going south as far as Agadir where it is warm in winter.

Re. agriculture.
There's been a big wave of regulation and they have to pay proper hourly wages and provide good accommodation, usually in nice static caravans with heating etc.
Only thing is they prefer foreign workers as they don't cavil and bitch and are simply better than the UK unemployed according to the farmers.
However, at the moment they are struggling to get enough foreign workers.
Not sure when the apple season is. Probably about now?

Old friend of mine is a carrot farmer in the fens east of Peterborough. He would use eastern euro gangs back in the day as it was easier to just deal with the gang leaders.RobW wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 9:50 amRe. agriculture.

In addition to the carrots, the last I heard is that he'd also cultivated a massive cocaine habit. Lots of money in that kind of farming.
