Is the security guard homeless?
Just wake them up, unapologetically, every time. It's fine. They don't mind.
I like Yep's idea, and glad your early inclination was to get involved to make things a little better!
Alexandra's comment was wise enough, trying to help not only risks bringing a degree of involvement/entanglement you might not be prepared for, but it also might not at all work out as you intend. Maybe start small and feel it out step by step - buy them some Khmer food on the way home one night. Then the next time you arrive very late, a knowing smile between you and the guard shows you are back to even and he is not in your debt.
I know many of those in garments and tourism who lost jobs since Jan 2020 returned to their home provinces to wait out the slowdown, but I'm also curious about Horace's question, does PP seem more poor in any ways than before virus impacts?

Make them uncomfortable as payback for making you uncomfortable. Sneak up quietly and suddenly become a loud drunk when nearby. After being scared multiple times they’ll change their living situation or it’ll at least provide some entertainment for you.

I recall most guards, in exchange for a hammock would get $110 a month. As mentioned a low priced job. Businesses I worked for would pay $100-$150 a month for a semi awake guy in blue to sign then in.
Theres an American guy I recall has a firm for security guards, they may be better trained and charge more or could be your lucky supermarket guards i forget.
If you give $100 a month you'll be likely doubling his salary. I usually give mine (of the apartment)a small daily tip and a bonus on the holidays in beers and cash. It's up to their boss to pay them properly really.

$60.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
You’re very virtuous. Be a big boy and accept what you are.
Like all well-meaning lefties, getting involved will lead to all sorts of unintended consequences. Do nothing.

Bollocks. He’s probably paid $300 for that. If you go through a reputable company like GSS or PCS that would cost you $400-$500, and he’d get the same $300. If you’re a wealthy Cambodian family and it’s a private gate guy you’re still in the $150-$200 range.
Don’t interfere - are you going to help every family here you think suffers a bit? His job is to open the gate for you, come home whenever you want and have him open the gate for you. If he takes too long waking up then remind him of what his job is, and replace as necessary.
Tip him on holidays and all is good and well.

Forgot about the guard. Wake him up whenever you want. Stop being such a douche.

I don't think help/don't help is very much a Left wing, Right Wing issue.
Maybe this is a 'City Person'/ 'Small Town Person' thing. City folk have too many daily interactions and simply can't be nice to everyone without being overloaded. Provincial folk are more likely to smile at strangers, because we can. I am very far from a Trump supporter, but I think you could pull into a tiny town in the heart of Trump 'fly-over-country', and if you had some car problem, for example, people would help you out. Same in any 'Blue' small town. Ditto for Cambodia.
I can agree with most of you that this question isn't worth thinking long and hard about, but to my provincial mentality, helping a bit seems simple, low stress, and natural.

Just tip in the usual way if you think he deserves. And give him an extra few bucks at holidays.
And stop being such a douche.

Thanks Rob.
I'm working up to it. Been a lurker since first owner. Posted maybe 3 times when Peter had it, but was ok to have lost my password and forgot my user name. Now, stuck overseas, I'm reading the forums more frequently.
Because of my long and rich K440 posting history, ha ha, I'll probably join this form before the "new" one, but I must say this one, relatively speaking, is feeling a bit underpopulated lately. Being so far away, I value them both!
