The UK embassy identified his remains by DNA testing if I remember correctly. RIP Denis. Personally I think he was murdered.Guest999 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 1:38 pmMore seriously, was a body for Uncle Monty every clearly identified, or just a body that couldn't be easily identified was assumed to be him?
Have any expats in Cambodia ever faked their own deaths?

Seeing he was setting up a school and supposedly had a lot of cash on hand I think you are right.rektj00 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 7:05 pmThe UK embassy identified his remains by DNA testing if I remember correctly. Maybe a robbery gone wrong, he was not someone to hand over his money voluntary.
But yeah, RIP Denis.

Denis was a chronic alcoholic. While murder can't be ruled out, the chances of him being two sheets to the wind and falling into the river/having some sort of seizure are far more likely.Visser wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 7:54 pmSeeing he was setting up a school and supposedly had a lot of cash on hand I think you are right.rektj00 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 7:05 pmThe UK embassy identified his remains by DNA testing if I remember correctly. I knew him and I don't know what happened but he was a bit of a mess most evenings so I thought an accidental death was perfectly feasible.

Then wouldn't you expect the news to come out the same or next day?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 8:37 pmI knew him and I don't know what happened but he was a bit of a mess most evenings so I thought an accidental death was perfectly feasible.
Normally Cambodians run towards an accident to take pictures.
How long was he missing until his body was found?

As far as I can remember his corpse floated downstream and was found far downriver. He slipped into the black murky waters of the Mekong and was swept away. Nobody will ever know. That's one of the fucked up things about life, people die in mysterious circumstances and none of their friends or family ever know what happened. Not just here, but more likely with the lack of forensics. I quite liked Dennis, my kid used to call him Mr Bean.

I don't think Denis' demise was a robbery gone wrong nor a drunken accident. I'd suggest examining the clientele and the publican of the former Charlie's Bar.Visser wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 7:54 pmSeeing he was setting up a school and supposedly had a lot of cash on hand I think you are right.rektj00 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 7:05 pmThe UK embassy identified his remains by DNA testing if I remember correctly. Sadly his body was found well before he was missing. It washed up downstream deep in rural Kampong Cham where it was buried by the local Sangkat as it was an unidentified corpse. I think around mid October 2013 there was a thread made here looking for him. That old guy that died recently was deluded into thinking he had just seen Denis when no one actually had heard from him for quite a while. Eventually his family back in the UK hired a private investigator to search for him. He managed to find the reports from the local government in to the unidentified body which then located Denis' remains.Visser wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 9:33 pmThen wouldn't you expect the news to come out the same or next day?Lucky Lucan wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 8:37 pmI knew him and I don't know what happened but he was a bit of a mess most evenings so I thought an accidental death was perfectly feasible.

If I could be bothered searching these forums I'd locate the threads relating to it. Perhaps gavinmac can.

Thanks, I had some contact with the PI at the time and saw the thread but missed the bit about him being buried in the boonies.rektj00 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 6:45 amSadly his body was found well before he was missing. Jeez
That’s a pretty intense story.
Good work by the PI . I mean what were the chances of finding him.....

Interesting...tell us more.
pew, pew, pew, pew!
Thanks for the DNA info. At least that was some closure for his parents.
I liked him too.
Occam's razor made a drunken slip the best explanation, or perhaps a drunken slip with someone else present/ involved but without intent to harm. Nevertheless, something nefarious seemed possible, if less likely. I never imagined an angry publican. I had heard he could sometimes get more troublesome getting into the wee hours, but that was not the man I knew. Almost believable, would be someone who didn't want his school plan to happen. But not ultimately believable, because who would really care that much.
RIP

I don't post on the TOF and saw the thread that inspired this thread. I saw that alleged thieving British meth head at GSM one morning about a month ago. He had a ball cap on and sat in the background, trying not to be noticed.gavinmac wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 12:02 amI recently read a thread on another forum about an alleged thieving British meth head often seen on Street 172 who suddenly disappeared from the streets for a few weeks. Now his friends are posting on Facebook that he's dead. Which he probably is. A lot of foreign drug abusers drop dead in Cambodia.
However, Cambodia has no shortage of scammers, chancers and frauds. There are expats running away from legal or financial problems in their home countries, and expats who get into trouble in Cambodia and then want to run away from the new problems they created here.
I've heard of expats who move across town or across the country to escape creditors and deranged bargirls, but I can't recall any instance of an expat faking his own death, either before or after moving to Cambodia.
Some people suggested that Khmer440 owner "Keepjng_it_Riel" may have faked his own death, but a few trustworthy Khmer440 posters saw his body in the morgue, so I'm pretty sure he's dead. There were also some rumors that accused murdered "Mick the Pom" was spotted out and about shortly after he reportedly kicked the bucket in front of dozens of spectators at the Kampot "Moto Mayhem," but that seems unlikely.
I think it would be pretty easy to fake your own death in this social media age. Simply ask some dodgy friends to post "RIP Bob" on your Facebook wall and let the news of your demise spread far and wide. Or, if you have no friends, just create some fake FB profiles and use them to post RIP messages to yourself.
If extreme measures are needed, just invite another expat who looks somewhat like you to your apartment for a drink and then kill him and light his body on fire. It's not like Cambodian police are going to check dental records and DNA to confirm the identity of the corpse. They'll just announce that the charred remains in your apartment are you and that you died of a heart attack.
I may be wrong, but I have doubts about his death.

I thought about a scenario where this sketchy guy has totally burned all his bridges. Then he gets a photo taken on a gurney or whatever with his eyes looking into space. Gets the name of a nearby funeral home, sends a few Emails looking for reimbursement for services. Money arrives, crack-party!
