Spirit drinkers getting fleeced in bars
Spirit drinkers getting fleeced in bars
Beer is virtually given away in many bars here yet those who prefer spirits get their pants pulled down. Especially cheaper things like gin or vodka, mark-ups of circa 1000% are not unheard of in Phnom Penh and I'm not talking high roller joints either.
Why is the mark-up on spirits so radically different from beer?

Yeah definitely. Also I'd like to know if the spirits are fake or watered down or anything else? All I know is last year while visiting HK, I drank a good few glasses of J.Daniels and was quite drunk. Back in the Penh, at most bars, can drink heaps of the stuff before feeling the good effects. What's the deal?orde wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 8:04 amBeer is virtually given away in many bars here yet those who prefer spirits get their pants pulled down. Being a bourbon and JD drinker for over 30 years, I note on occasion non JD in the glass, or even watered down to some degree or something. One of the reasons, among many, I stopped bar crawling.

As mentioned, given the high markup on spirits that is simply ridiculous. Offending establishments should be named and boycotted.Felgerkarb wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 10:56 amI note on occasion non JD in the glass, or even watered down to some degree or something
Accidents could always happen with poorly trained, non-english speaking staff pouring the incorrect drink.
"Goodness me! Now STD free..."
Clearly this isn't an issue for many. Wonder why?
I'd say many of the patrons in these bars don't have a clue what they're drinking. As already said, the beers are practically given away, so they get tanked up then go onto to spirits, usually with a mixer. By this stage they're past caring. Come pay day they treat themselves to a bottle of something from Navy shop, as long as it's around $20. Go home get sozzled and smugly congratulate themselves that they can do this. Next day with a raging hangover and sore throat begin to wonder what the hell were they drinking.?!

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.

Depends on where you drink. Places I go nowadays don't do it. I found the problem more in hostess bars a few years back.Jonno wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 2:36 amClearly this isn't an issue for many. Wonder why?
As for what Lucky said, most of the expats I know drink beer.

Mostly places that did not survive COVID. I called them out on it at the time, not that it mattered. As I said, it happened enough for me to notice, but never happened in any good place that I still go.

I had a Jameson as Botanico. Fucking Botanico that isn't even in a building, you have to just sit outside with flies buzzing around your face (on a stool made from bits of rebar FFS). $4 per measure
A litre of Jameson is $15 at SuperDuper which would be $0.45 per shot. Bars must pay wholesale prices so let's call it $0.40 at the outside. That's a 900% markup.
I'm seriously not getting it at all. Beer is a ballache because it is bulky and heavy to move plus takes up loads of space, it needs the hassle and energy cost of keeping it cool. Beer can go bad, it needs to be stored correctly. The effort of providing a frosty glass with each one. Hard booze is the exact opposite of all that.

I think that many of the people commenting on this page have no understanding of the bar business in Phnom Penh. There is a big mark up in spirits. But, you have to make a profit somewhere in order to pay the bills each month. You can't sell everything cheap and survive. Beer prices are super cheap in Phnom Penh, so there is not much money to be made selling beer. Food is hyper competitive and you have no margins selling food. You have to make money somewhere in order to survive.
You say that like there is only one possible business model: give away the food, give away the beer, make all your profit from spirits.
