Will likely retire in Spain or somewhere similarly exotic.
Compared to say.... Basingstoke or somewhere, Spain is exotic?
Porto, then maybe??
Are you British? If so you will now need an income of £2000 per month and £500 per month for each extra dependent to live in Spain, thanks to Brexit.

Not sure where you have been... But more or less half of the Chinese presently in Cambodia are simply gangsters. The other half may be genuinely legitimate businessmen... Many Chinese thugs of the type in the kidnap video above are hired by bosses to come work here initially. Some get involved with loan-sharking or thieving. Many accumulate debts of their own...techietraveller84 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 2:32 amAre the Chinese generally perceived to be the most dangerous bunch in Cambodia? There sure is a lot of news about violence, crime and murder.
The victims above where probably taken by two guys who are in hock to someone else for gambling debts, and they needed to raise money pronto... There is usually no other reason for them to go after rich couples but desperation to raise cash quickly. They may simply be living the easy life on other's money, but that is less likely than the "desperate for money scenario." They aren't natural born killers, or the same type as the blacks who drive around BMWs in South Africa, murdering anyone gratuitously just to steal more money.
In Cambodia these days, most Chinese on Chinese crime tends to involve loan sharks trying to recoup what they lent the week or two before to some dumb gambler... However, the above case looks like they targeted a couple because they are rich, not because they loaned money to them. That scenario has already happened a few times over here in Cambodia already. There was an almost identical case of Chinese desperados targeting a rich couple in Sihanoukville a couple of years ago, too...

I am trying to make a distinction in the type and character of the crimes being committed here... The Chinese are desperate criminals, trying to recoup losses. In contrast to the type of very violent and gratuitous crime that happens in South Africa. I have been there, so I know...

You are a UK national living in Ireland as far as I know, so you will be fine because of the treaty which predates the EU by 50 years or so. UK nationals who live in other EU countries are facing some major restrictions.spitthedog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 2:32 amWell, when I say retire, flights are so cheap, and familiarity breeds contempt, so Europe is our oyster, so to speak.Guest wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:47 amspitthedog wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 7:39 pmWell is all relative innit?YaTingPom wrote: ↑Sat Jan 16, 2021 7:07 pmSpain is hardly exotic. This is one of those rare instances where being rich isn't nearly as good as it sounds, especially if you're Chinese.Orichá wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 9:54 amThe victims above where probably taken by two guys who are in hock to someone else for gambling debts, and they needed to raise money pronto... My uncle has always spent 6 months or so in Benidorm (very exotic), and the rest between Blighty and Goa.
We might get itchy feet though, I guess.
