Lending to expats
Lending to expats
Recent exchanges on the freezer chop chop murder thread got me thinking about the follies of lending to expats. It seems a lot of ire towards the fella is that he owes many people thousands of bucks. I guess that’s understandable.
However, it’s my experience that if you lend money to expats it is usually the borrower who gets all weird and angry, and it always destroys the friendship. I once lent a few hundred bucks to a guy in need in PNH and never really expected to get it back. No problem - until he came to me again asking for $3000. When I refused, he got shitty and I’ve never heard from him again.
I’m aware of another situation where a group of friends loaned and supported another expat for 4-5 years. Needless to say it has all ended in tears, with the borrower flouncing off and breaking off friendships which in some cases have existed for 15 years. No payback was requested, but the guy has pulled away, broken off all ties and declared to anyone who will listen that he “is sick of expat bullshit”.
Moral of the story. Don’t lend money to your mates in Cambodia. It will not end well.

Help someone once they will be grateful. Help them 1000 times and they will resent you for the one time you said no.

A person requiring 4-5 years of financial support in Cambodia is likely experiencing loss of pride, self confidence, self esteem, and depression. Understandably. So breaking off ties etc is likely more to do with that than anything.scobienz wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 3:31 pmRecent exchanges on the freezer chop chop murder thread got me thinking about the follies of lending to expats. No, and in fairness I suspect vlad would do everything he could to repay any debts he had.
I lost a small amount, under $100. Guy actually came to pay me back but I didn’t have change so I told him next time. He fled the country after some baddies were after him over a bad business dealing. They even posted a fake pedo story about him on 440 as a collection tactic.
I had someone ask me for $10k as a business loan. Said no. He asked me by CCing me on an email to his mother. He closed up shop and was out of Cambodia a couple months later.

I don't recall any fake pedo stories on Khmer440. I recall some real pedo arrest stories and commenters saying "It's a set up!"

It was deleted from 440 rather quickly.

Was it the prequel to the legendary "scobiennz sort this shit out" thread?

He fled the country because he was afraid of the pie salesman?

Nah, he wasn't well known on 440 AFAIK. He was a tech guy and his missus was from Singapore.Alexandra wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:12 pmWas it the prequel to the legendary "scobiennz sort this shit out" thread?

There was a car parked in front of his building for days waiting for him to come home, someone was knocking on his neighbors' doors in the apartment building asking about him. He left and never got any of his belongings out of his apartment.
The thread had his photo and no source. Too bad it was deleted, I was just preparing the popcorn. I think it was 2013-2014

Did this go hand in hand with a flouncing off of 440 ?

While scobie’s information was anonymised it was ok but when people start posting hints about who the expat is I think it is out of order. Gossip offline but don’t add insult to injury by putting it on the internet. It can affect what is already limited work prospects.
