RIP Brett Sciaroni
Karen is a curious mix. It’s like three different people write each paragraph.

Seriously mate what is wrong with you?Ot Mean Loi wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 2:47 pmSorry to learn of his demise.
Fortunately, I never had occasion to use the services of his Law Office which had a reputation for very high fees in all that it undertook.
Fortunately I have ready access to a Cambodian-Australian lawyer who is also an accredited member of the Cambodian Bar Association.
But I am uncertain how Scarioni gained the title ascribed to him in this thread or indeed if he deserves it.

You say you don't know why you get ridiculed here, but here you are boasting about how well connected you are on a thread about someone passing away.
'Sorry to hear he died, but look how great I am!'
Give it a rest.

He was a disgraceful man but that's certainly a good thing in these Victorian times.

Never met the man nor saw him in bars but he wasn’t considered a serious lawyer by serious lawyers - none of the international firms trying to get local counsel in Cambodia would touch him with a barge pole. Not sure why - his reputation for not passing his bar exams and being Hun Sen’s stooge would not have gone down well with their clients I guess.
My impression 2013-2014 was that he was semi-retired. Mostly rubbing elbows while the client work was done by the other expats and local team.scobienz wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 4:36 pmNever met the man nor saw him in bars but he wasn’t considered a serious lawyer by serious lawyers - none of the international firms trying to get local counsel in Cambodia would touch him with a barge pole. I believe back in the day it was the benefit of being the only game in town, other firms started stepping up 2010 onwards. Not coincidentally, a number of the expats there to start the decade moved on to other ventures by the middle of it.

Yeah he just hung his shingle early and enjoyed spectacular success purely without any political connections,
Duh,

Why not both? JackassGuest wrote: ↑Sat Mar 13, 2021 10:09 pm"I believe back in the day it was the benefit of being the only game in town"

That was my understanding. And I think the only foreigner who was an honorary member of Cambodian bar.
He was also an honourary member of Larry's Bar....I remember once being asked to vacate my outdoor table when he arrived for his ice and towel treatment....
Everyone loved this gentle giant.
Everyone loved this gentle giant.
Except those that lost their seats to him right in the middle of their meals.
I think the articles and posts calling him an "American lawyer" may be somewhat misleading. As far as I know, he was licensed in Pennsylvania once (way back in the 1980s).
May be better to say that he had at one time been an American lawyer. Bar associations in the US don't allow a person to call himself/herself "an American lawyer" unless currently licensed and in good standing (dues paid up, etc.).
Given the IBA has repeatedly called the Cambodian Bar Association the most corrupt in the world with bribes paid to join and bribery endemic in Cambodian legal community, Brett being an honorary member is hardly a huge achievement.
