Changes to guest posting
Changes to guest posting
It can be difficult to follow threads with multiple guests posting, especially when multiple people are using the same default "Guest" nickname. This change has been requested for some time in order to make guest posting less confusing.
From now on every guest will have a unique ID number appended to their guest handles to make it easier to distinguish anonymous guests. For example instead of saying "Guest" it will say "Guest (!vUrSmfP6WI)". If the same Guest decides to change nickname then the same Guest will have a nickname like "New nickname (!vUrSmfP6WI)" with the same unique ID.
Guests remain anonymous but threads with multiple guests become more readable. The change is only applied to new guest posts starting now.
I will make an example guest post in response on this thread so that you can see the change in effect.

I am the same guest responding.Guest (!vtPblhQOpA) wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 1:37 amThis is a guest post.
Let's see how this pans out
Placement will change. It’s a bit annoying how it’s cluttering thread lists. It should only display on posts inside a thread.
I also don’t like how it appears in quotes.
These issues are minor and will be resolved very soon. Please provide feedback if there’s anything else you have in mind.

Guests arguing with guests can be rather confusing. I also feel the function is overused by those who wish to remain anonymous themselves but have no qualms about throwing derision on established members. Nobody has done this to me but other members have suffered terribly.
Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
Fixed guest ID display issues (see this example).
I agree that guest posts should not be used to attack members and we reject quite a lot of posts like that. Please report any post you feel crosses that line because it is not tolerated.

Its unlikely guest troll posts get through the moddies but if a guest is a moddie sock, well then.
There are many issues with discussion forums.
If discussion is relegated beneath forum politics its a shit forum.
Human interaction without issues...lol...never

I highly commend this effort of supporting, protecting, and respecting the presence of guests on this forum, in a time when they are otherwise being more and more deprived of their most basic human rights of anonymous shitposting in so many places.
Guest lives matter! And now they are even identified by their unique id to distinguish them as individuals.
'tis one small step for a guest, one giant leap for guestkind.
Thank you so much.
Guest pride worldwide!

When I write as guest, in the guest quick-reply form, and enter my registered username as guest user name I am informed that this name is reserved and can't be appropriated by guests. So far, so good.
In the page displaying this error, I can amend my posting and inputs, including my guest name.
But then when I send it says "JavaScript needs to be enabled to post as guest". But JavaScript is enabled here.

Welcome to even more chaos. Do you really think, people can distinguish between those gibberish random additions ????

I think it's a decent solution to a minor issue. It's not so difficult to follow. The purpose is to follow a discussion in a thread. Not to remember who said what six weeks ago.
I don't see how it brings more chaos?
This happens in rare cases where the page hasn’t loaded completely either due to early form submission or network problems.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 7:38 amWhen I write as guest, in the guest quick-reply form, and enter my registered username as guest user name I am informed that this name is reserved and can't be appropriated by guests. It’s very difficult, near impossible to fix on my end, and the most reliable thing to do when it happens is to go back, hard refresh the page so that cache is reset and pray to the network gods that it doesn’t happen again.
I will try to address this and see if improvements can be made.
In the meantime please know that it doesn’t happen to signed in members, only to guests.
Thank you.trollkotze as guest wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 7:32 amI highly commend this effort of supporting, protecting, and respecting the presence of guests on this forum, in a time when they are otherwise being more and more deprived of their most basic human rights of anonymous shitposting in so many places.

In my opinion anonymity is a very important part of the internet. I remember a time when people could comment anonymously on news sites for example, then the Disqus type comment fields appeared, people started identifying commentators “for research”, and then they either removed commenting completely or replaced them with Facebook.
This idea of accountability is effectively used to silence people, and website owners applaud themselves for relieving them of moderation efforts.
Moderation is hard but the ability to speak is more important than personal comfort.

Do you have any suggestions for how it could be done better?
I thought about changing post colors but then guest posts would be more attractive to the eye than posts by signed up members. Not a good choice.
I thought about not letting guests set their own nicknames. Not a good choice.
I personally think it’s easy to see if a guest ID starts with a certain few letters. I don’t think it’s chaotic because I only see it if I want to, like the date and time of a post for example.
