How many of us left?
Long term Barang Residents seem to leave in greater numbers now. During the past 6 weeks a total of 8 Barangs that lived in Kampot since more than 10 years have left Cambodia for good.
The majority saw no light at the end of a tunnel that seems to be not only caused by the pandemic but also on worries about what's happening at home and around the world. Now news that report daily shortages of food, coal, gas combined with natural desasters from flooding to huge fires and even vulcano erruptions make people scared. The whole thing is excellerated by fears that the Chinese Money Machine is now stuttering (Evergrande may be the start of it) and developement in Cambodia (and other Belt Road Countries) will come to a sudden halt.
Travelling has become much harder and more expensive. Ticket prices have gone up and Quarantine and Testing add significantly to the costs. All that while Governments announce that they will SOON open to Tourism again because the local economy is already on it's knees.
I'm glad to be in Cambodia. No heating oil, no mink coat, cheap accomodation and so far still friendly local people.

Well the natural disaster thing happens every year and why would you want to go home for that?
Sure, there are spurts of shortages but blame that on the sheep who panic buy. It’s a short term thing.
Seen videos of punch ups at petrol stations in the UK. I’ve seen punch ups in person at petrol stations loads of times with my own eyes. Doesn’t mean Jack.
Don’t read too much into it. Don’t panic.

pew, pew, pew, pew!
Are there shortages in Cambodia? Heard they had them in the USA & UK, but never saw anything in Cambodia.
@Rune Yes, i agree with you. We live in a sort of paradise bubble compared to what you can expect back in Europe, US, Australia.
While the Summer Holiday Season there was opening up for a while everyone knew it would be back to lockdown once autumn/winter hits. Just imagine you lived in Cambodia for decades and than return home (whatever that is) and find out that things there have changed dramatically. Most of all the cost of living or even renting a flat. No way i would ever want to return to a society that lives in a straight jacket. I love the Kingdom of which i wonder many times.

During the lock down some of the import products that I usually purchase disappeared from the shelves for a few weeks but now they are all available at Super Duper, Bayon super market.
Today another Brit left, Larry of the Yogabarn Kampot left for the UK
May he find the country that he remembered. I wish him luck.

Yoga seems quite pretty popular in Kampot. That barn place was a yoga vegan place.
They’re all struggling especially restaurants or niche places, like yoga, hoola hoop classes or mental awareness retreats.
There’s just no customers.
Many places quietly closing whilst others sell their tat on FB.
It’s fucked.

I dunno seems like more and more long term expats who have been here way longer than the pandemic and don't need to worry about [ too much] working nor money are moving down to Kampot. I know of four that have made the move recently from PP and SR.YaTingPom wrote: ↑Fri Oct 01, 2021 8:51 pmYoga seems quite pretty popular in Kampot. That barn place was a yoga vegan place.

Romantic Cambodia is dead and gone. It's with McKinley in the grave.
I think, those returning have an idealistic view of their "back home" country.
All the "bad" things mentioned about Cambodia, I see in larger quantities "back home".
Provided you have sufficient money, I do think, Cambodia would be an excellent location to stay, as long as HS is chief in office.

@ LL Nothing to worry about. Yoga Barn still open but you will have to share the place with a batch of mostly british women in their 30s. As far as i can tell they are really eager to wolcome a REAL MAN. So yes, go and experience the enlightenment.
It certainly looks like the world has turned upside down. Most of the locations that I have been berated by friends who have returned are places I would like to avoid at this time. Not interested in getting a $ 70,000 bill for not having the right QR code handy.
